Powerhouse vocalist Sari Schorr is well-known to us at JLTT and she has recorded a new album with the legendary Robin Trower called ‘Joyful Sky’. Sari chatted to us about the record and her plans:
You and Robin Trower will be releasing your new album ‘Joyful Sky’. How did this collaboration happen and how did you want to approach the record?
Robin and I were introduced by our manager, Alan Robinson. Initially, Alan had reached out to Robin, requesting a few songs for my upcoming album, which was the sole focus at the time. However, as soon as Robin and I began collaborating on those tracks, it became abundantly clear that we shared a special chemistry. It was Robin who proposed the idea of embarking on a full album together, prompting both of us to set our solo albums aside and commence our collaborative project, ‘Joyful Sky.’
My approach to the album involved blending my vocals with Robin’s distinct sound and creative vision. I aimed to use my voice as a conduit for conveying the songs’ emotional depth, while Robin’s guitar contributed layers of richness and texture to the music.
What was the inspiration/story behind the track ‘I’ll Be Moving On’?
All the songs on the album were penned by Robin. “I’ll Be Moving On” stands as an anthem of breaking free from a toxic relationship, symbolizing the courage required to embark on a fresh chapter in one’s life. Personally, I’m drawn to songs that convey the journey of overcoming adversity and the pursuit of personal growth.
Where did you record the album and were there any particular pieces of equipment/microphones/effects that you particularly enjoyed using?
We recorded the album at Studio 91 in Newbury. During the recording, I used a JZ V67 cardioid condenser microphone from their vintage series. This microphone is meticulously handcrafted in Latvia and is renowned for its exceptional sound quality. It offers a transparent, pristine sound with a delightful, natural warmth, and it can handle high volume levels without any distortion.
Where is your hometown and could you please describe it in five words?
My hometown is Brooklyn, New York. Brooklyn in five words: Diverse, Brazen, Vibrant, Proud, Pizza
Do you have any plans for any performances to support the release?
Robin and I are enthusiastic about the prospect of performing together on stage. Despite our hectic schedules, we remain optimistic that the chance to collaborate will eventually arise.
Understanding that there might be a waiting period before our joint performances, we decided to capture a live concert for our fans to enjoy. This special performance is available for viewing on Robin’s website.

How do you look after your voice?
Maintaining the optimal condition of my voice primarily involves incorporating regular exercise, adhering to a healthy diet, and aiming for a consistent 7-hour sleep schedule. These are substantial challenges when I’m on tour.
Another track on the album is ‘Burn’. I really love the vocal tone on this song. How did you approach the vocals on this song?
Thank you for the compliment! “Burn” was an exercise in restraint. I believed that the song’s emotional impact would be most powerful when approached with a delicate touch. My aim was to express profound empathy for those struggling with self-destructive tendencies.
Who designed/created the album cover?
Robin, as he has done for previous releases, created the artwork for the cover. His talent shines through in his exquisite oil paintings. The album cover stands as a vital element of Robin’s artistic expression that harmonizes with the music’s emotional tone. It is a testament to Robin’s artistic mastery that he can effectively transport an audience to a realm where music and art become one.
New York City based artist, Kee Koo created the cover design.
Who did you have in the band during the recording sessions?
My close friend Chris Taggart displayed remarkable skill in recording the drum tracks. With over 14 years of experience in Robin’s live band, Chris’s expertise shines through. Robin himself took on the role of playing bass for the record.
Do you have any interesting/funny/memorable stories from the album recording?
One of the most unforgettable moments was witnessing Robin’s response to the vocals as we progressed through the album recording. After a take, Robin would beckon me back into the control room, and the atmosphere was nothing short of electric. His face was aglow with a radiant smile, and his eyes sparkled with enthusiasm. Seeing Robin Trower, the legendary musician, with his hands raised in appreciation, is a memory I’ll forever cherish. It truly exemplifies the incredible power of music.
On a slight side note – You and I have a few mutual friends including vocalist Rietta Austin. How did the two of you meet?
I had the pleasure of meeting the lovely Rietta in New York City at a venue where both of our performances were scheduled. We met backstage. Rietta generously offered to let me try her new Mac lipstick, and from that moment, a deep and immediate friendship was forged between us.
What do you have lined up for the reminder of 2023/early 2024?
At present, I’m on the final leg of the European Freedom Tour, bringing it to a close. In the upcoming month, I’m set to start recording my new album, with plans for an early release next year. Looking ahead, 2024 holds the promise of my most extensive UK tour to date. For the full tour schedule, you can visit www.sarischorr.com/tour.
What makes Sari Schorr happy and what makes you unhappy?
What brings me happiness: Acts of kindness, captivating music, cherished friendships, a robust cup of coffee, and that moment when I write the final word of a great song.
What brings me unhappiness: conflict, ignorance, narrow-mindedness, apathy, and injustice.
