UK-based duo Faeland have released their new single ‘Give Up What You Know’ and they kindly chatted to us about recording the single and more:
How did you both meet and start Faeland?
We met in Bristol at a house party. In one room people were hanging out and playing music, Jacob and I were both in this room but didn’t speak that night, just played music together with the others. We later found each other online and started meeting up to play and write music together.
You have released your new single ‘Give Up What You Know’ after a three-year hiatus. What is the inspiration/story behind the track?
A few years ago I (Rebecca) burnt out after a long period of stress. We were working multiple day jobs, recording, crowdfunding and gigging all at the same time, plus no one had heard of Faeland so we were putting on the gigs and events in order to make them happen. One day I couldn’t sit up in bed. I later understood this to be the start of my new life with chronic fatigue syndrome (also known as ME). Since then I’ve had to put the brakes on in order to be well (I’m no longer bedridden) but, as a busy person who loves doing stuff all the time, this doesn’t come easily. Jacob is constantly encouraging me to slow down and take better care of myself. That voice of his is the main inspiration for the lyrics, and the words and music are inspired by us both processing how we live with my body as it is these days.
The single is recorded and produced by Rob Pemberton (Keyboard player of The Staves). How did that collaboration arise and how did you want to approach the recording?
Rob lives in the same town as us and is a mutual friend of Jacob’s friend Rachael Dadd (also a fantastic musician!). We invited him to play drums on our last album and really enjoyed his company and approach to music making. We wanted the latest recording to be as stress-free as possible so we aimed to record locally. When we remembered Rob had a studio a stone’s throw away from us, we contacted him and told him our mission of recording something brilliant but also something low-key and with absolutely no stress! He promised he’d make this happen for us and he did. Rob plays keyboards and drums on this track, and he engineered the recording too! We’re very happy with the recording experience and how the song has turned out.
Where is your hometown and could you please describe it in five words?
Stroud – Earthy, Housing Crisis, Disparity, Caring
Do you have any plans to release anymore new music such as another single or an EP?
Yes and we’re very excited about it! New album to be recorded in 2024 (watch this space for an exciting collaboration with one of our favourite bands on this album!). We’ll launch a crowdfunding campaign for the album in early 2024. Oh and we also recorded a 2nd single with Rob so all being well we hope to get that out quite soon if we find a moment!
Do you have any favoured stage instruments, effects, pedals etc?
(Jacob would love to answer this I’m sure but he’s out with our toddler as I write!!!, I know he loves his Martin guitar)
How do you look after your voices?
Vocal exercises and warm ups on YouTube, good food, no dairy and a bit of yoga.
Do you have any plans for any live shows in 2024?
Health is so up and down that we’ve had to pause these for a while in order to make the new album happen. Planning to tour in early 2025 but if we’re lucky we might squeeze in a local show at some point before then.
What makes Faeland happy and what makes you unhappy?
Not recording any music = unhappy
Recording new music = happy
