Singer-songwriter and musician Tom Killner will release his new album ‘Borrowed Time’ on 12th April 2024. We wanted to borrow some of his time to talk about his new record and more:

Your new album ‘Borrowed’ Time’ will be released April 12. How did you want to approach the making of the record?

This record has been a marathon rather than a sprint. A few tracks have been knocking about for a long time. But this record came about through lockdown where a fair bit was written and then some more quite recently even one a few days before we started tracking.

Where did you record it and who produced it?

‘Borrowed Time’ was done in bits. We tracked drums live in the place where we rehearse and all the other instruments were recorded at my home studio. Vocals were done at House of Tone with Wayne Proctor who brought so much to the album. Production was myself and the guys in the band with final edits with Wayne.

Do you have any interesting, funny or memorable stories from the recording sessions?

Tracking drums was a laugh, lugging all the studio gear in setting up going to play a gig and tracking until about 4 in the morning, fortunately there were no neighbours to complain late at night!

Where is your hometown and could you please describe it in five words?

Rotherham is my hometown. I’m not sure I could describe it although it’s been voted as the UK’s unhappiest place to be.

What music/artists do you enjoy listening to? Any recommendations?

Jason Isbell, Ryan Adams, Tom Petty, Chris Stapleton, Blackberry Smoke. There’s so many great artists but these are some of what I’m really digging right now.

Do you have any favoured stage instruments, effects, pedals?

My favourite guitar right now would be a 2004 Gibson Les Paul Classic I picked up while out on tour, that thing is killer. I’m quite simple when it comes to rig setups but my favourite pedal would have to be the BBE tremelo pedal with the dual speed tremolo that’s a handy one to have.

Do you have any live plans for 2024 in the UK and Europe?

We’re playing a good number of festivals in Call of the Wild, Rockwich, HRH Blues, SOS Festival and others yet to be announced. We also hit the road in a double header with southern rockers American band Hush Money. We have plans to head back into Europe after we played Spain last year so keep your eyes peeled for more!

You have a special album release show planned – when, where and do you have any special guests joining you?

Yes, we have the new album launch show at Yellow Arch Studio Sheffield March 22 where I’ll be playing a VIP acoustic set first followed by our electric set. The amazing Kier will be guesting as and also Ramblin’ Preachers who are cool. Not many tickets left, so get at it!

Who is in the band on the album?

Live our set up is Richard Hunter – Drums, Callum Houghton – Bass, Wesley Brook – Keys

On the album we have guests in Sam Wood (Blackstar Riders, Wayward Sons) – Pedal Steel, Anthony Croft – Fiddle and Kier Burke -Backing vocals

How do you look after your voice?

I try to warm up when I can, I have teas especially for voice care and Vocal Zone lozenges to hand. Mainly it’s about keeping really well hydrated with room temperature water and resting totally after a show.

Was it a difficult album to write?

I wouldn’t say it was difficult to write really because the songs written purposely for this record came quite quickly, there are some lyrical collaborations too. The most difficult process for me this time was getting the tracks recorded and I originally had the idea for the record to be done as an acoustic album but then that got all changed and we’ve finally ended up here which I’m really happy with and can’t wait for folk to hear it. What makes Tom Kilner happy and what makes you unhappy?

What makes me happy is getting on stage and playing to a really good responsive audience and coming off stage and having that buzz. Oh and finding a really good place to eat before a show, theres nothing better than that.

What makes me unhappy is the state of the world right now, the mess of things that politics have got us into, the fighting, it’s just a real mess.
