London-based Italian artist Kate Klein has released her new single ‘STUCK’ with her debut EP release coming soon. She kindly chatted to us about the single, her voice and more:
When did you begin songwriting?
It all started back in high school when my best friend and I decided to start a pop-punk girl band. I’ve never stopped since. Then, I moved to London and got into music production thanks to the mentoring of the in-house producers at Roundhouse. I would take songs from the charts and re-produce them, replicating the same sounds and structure. I spent nights adhding on a snare sound ahah.
What is your earliest musical memory?
My earliest musical memory is of my mum listening to Shania Twain. I got literally obsessed with her album “Come On Over.” At eight, I started playing the keyboard, and a bit later, the electric guitar. At school, I was that weird kid using chairs and pencils as a drum set.
Your new single ‘STUCK’ is out now. What was the story/inspiration behind the track?
I was feeling stuck in life, and as you can tell, I was fed up with it. My life was very chaotic, and I felt like I wasn’t moving forward. Every day felt the same: same dramas, same situationships, same bar. You know when you get too much in your head sometimes? I was feeling disconnected from my purpose. One night at a party, everyone seemed a bit stuck up. I went to the toilet and was texting a dude who was acting like a total D. That was my “A-ha moment” when I thought, “Yo, get your sh** together because nobody is gonna do that for you.”
Where did you record the single and who produced it?
I recorded it in my studio in London. I handle a big part of the vocal production and recordings on my own. It gives me enough time to really get the delivery right. I can spend hours on a single word if needed, and I don’t care about the “don’t obsess over it, just drop it” type of comments. This is how I am, and I’d rather spend hours than regret it later. The production was done in Italy by Giovanni Bottiglia and Alessandro Fapanni. We’ve worked on a few songs together so far!
The single is accompanied by an official music video. What was the thought process behind the video and who directed it?
was in Lanzarote a few months ago and drove by a beach called Playa del Papagayo. It looked like a movie set to me. Fast forward a few months, and here we are, in Lanzarote with a low rider and beer cans in my hair. It all happened naturally, and the energy on set was insane. I really wanted to capture that volcanic aura.
Which of your tracks hear you at your a) happiest and b) most reflective?
“Serotonin Pls” is my happy pill. “Kill My Heart” is my lonely roads jam.
What two things do you hope to have achieved once you have left the stage?
Taking people on a roller coaster of emotions and making them feel empowered: life-changing moments, like the ones my favorite artists give to me.
Do you have any favoured stage instruments, effects, pedals, microphones etc?
The Shure SM58 is my best friend. I have a soul connection to it, maybe because it was my first mic. The Shure SM7 is my studio mic. My preferred stage instrument is the guitar, but I wouldn’t mind playing drums live at some point.
Where is your hometown and could you please describe it in five words?
To be honest, I’ve lived in London for so long that now I consider it my hometown. I grew up in Italy, though, in a small town near Venice. It’s artistic, cinematic, pretty, alcoholic, and very theatrical.
How do you look after your voice?
I don’t do much, not gonna lie. I try not to scream too much when I’m recording something that hits my feelings. Of course, I warm up before doing final recordings.
You are given the opportunity to write the score for a film adaptation of a novel that you enjoy. Which novel is it and why?
I’d probably write a score for a new adaptation of Harley Quinn or any female supervillain graphic novel. I like writing fierce main character anthems.
Who are some of your musical influences? Do you have any recommendations?
I am a huge Lana Del Rey fan. I also love Post Malone and punk bands like Sum 41, Hole, and Blink-182. I am a massive music nerd, always listening to new artists. Stuff that hypes me right now includes Aidan Bisset, the latest Charli XCX album, Jessie Murph, and zesty pop artists like Ice Spice and Nessa Barrett. In the alt scene, I listen a lot to Beauty School Dropout, Royal & the Serpent, and Scene Queen.
Do you have any live dates planned in the UK/Europe in 2024/2025?
I’m playing Bay Fest with the Slam Dunk gang on the 12th of August. I’ll then start a school tour in the UK in October, which is gonna be insane. I’d love to play The Lexington, Roundhouse in London, and The Roxy Theatre in LA. My dream is to headline at the British Summer Time in Hyde Park one day and Of course, Glastonbury and Coachella—let’s put it out there in the universe.
Do you have any further music releases planned for 2024/2025?
There’s a lot of music coming out in the next few months, and an EP in November. A second Ep in 2025…
What makes Katie Klein happy and what makes you unhappy?
Connection and deep, meaningful conversations are what make me feel alive. Living experiences, talking to people and hearing their stories, traveling, writing songs and poetry—that’s when I feel most aligned with my purpose. I hate the feeling of being stuck, as you can tell!
