Decrepit Youths Talk Debut EP, Their Voices And More

Decrepit Youths

Dual fronted, high-octane heavy alt crew, Decrepit Youths, will release their debut EP ‘Love Psycho Kill Machine’ on Friday 21st March 2025. We spoke to the band about their debut EP, their voices and more:

Who is in Decrepit Youths, how did you meet and what do they play?

Myself (David) and Connor have been friends for 10 years and always been musicians. We are both lead vocalists and guitarists and decided to join forces and be a dual fronted band. Tim is from Tasmania, Australia and plays Bass. Tommy Lee (yes actually his name lol) plays drums!

What is your earliest musical memory?

Being in the school play as Joseph lol

You have the new single ‘Love Psycho Kill Machine’ out now. What was the inspiration/story behind the track?

Connor came up with the unusual name and hook. It was one of those songs that just fabricated within an hour and was a finished gem. It’s a real simple guitar riff and is heavily driven throughout the whole song. The bridge was the most creative section as it’s a re-sampled vocal off Nancy Regan’s “war on drugs” speech in the 1980s.

Did you collaborate with anyone on your new music in terms of the writing?

We keep all the writing in house but it’s something we would never say no too. We like the sound we are making as a band but we are always open to collaborating with other artists. We also work closely with a producer who helps us shape our sound.

In addition, you will release your debut EP, ‘Love Psycho Kill Machine’ on Friday 21st March 2025. How did you want to approach the making of the EP?

We wanted to make sure we had three stand out tracks which all hit the listener in different ways. They are all hard in your face rock bangers but unique in their own way.

Where did you record the EP and who produced it?

It was recorded with George Collings at Inheart studios in Blaydon, Newcastle Upon Tyne. We have worked with him on all our singles and we seem to be getting better with each one so I think it’s good to build a good relationship with your producer and mixing engineer.

Do you have any interesting, funny or memorable stories from the EP recording sessions?

Love Psycho Kill Machine has gang vocals on and they are always fun to record. Black dove actually has female vocals on it hidden in the mix from a local musician called Jo McGarry, although she isn’t a featured artist.

Do you use any particular instruments, microphones, recording equipment to help you get a particular sound/tone for the EP?

We record all our songs at Inheart Studios on high quality mics and outboard gear. It makes a big difference to the end result using hardware. We also use a Kemper to track guitars.

Which of your new EP tracks hear you at your a) happiest, b) angriest and c) most reflective?

Monster in me is the lost aggressive for sure. I would say it’s also the most experimental. It’s just total chaos from start to finish. Black dove has multi genres in it so that is also quite experimental.

Who created/designed the EP artwork?

The artwork was created by ourselves. We work closely with a photographer who shoots most of our content.

Was it a difficult EP to write?

Writing and producing is probably the most enjoyable part of music for us so it comes really natural. We tend to get ideas down fast and not get stuck into “overthinking” things.

What two things do you hope to have achieved once you have left the stage?

New fans and ringing ear drums.

Do you have any favoured stage instruments, effects, pedals, microphones etc?

Just a packed out venue and some good old SM58s and we’re ready to rock.

Where is your hometown and could you please describe it in five words?

Newcastle Upon Tyne. Come and see for yourself! lol

How do you look after your voices?

Steam and rest. Lots of water and in extreme situations honey and lemon .

You are given the opportunity to write the score for a film adaptation of a novel that you enjoy. Which novel is it and why?

Dracula would suit our music well! Dark and edgy ! lol

Who are some of your musical influences? Do you have any recommendations?

We have influences from multiple genres including Rock, Electronic , Drum and Bass and Film Composition.

Do you have any live dates planned in the UK/Europe in 2025?

We are performing at a few local festivals this summer and looking to put on our own headline show at some point.

Do you have any other new music releases planned for 2025 following the EP release?

We have just recorded our next 4 singles and we think it’s our best work yet!

What makes Decrepit Youths happy and what makes you unhappy?

Music creation is the most enjoyable part! The least favourite part is not getting the desired results from a release you expect but you can never be sure what will happen. The music industry is a tough business to crack!
