Lyubov Kay has released her single ‘cU’ and has plans to release more new music. She sat down with us to talk about the single, the recording sessions and more:
When did you begin songwriting?
I started writing songs when I was a teenager. At first, it was just a way to process my emotions, but over time it became my favorite way to tell stories and connect with people.
What is your earliest musical memory?
My earliest musical memory is singing when I was very little and trying to create songs out of the poems I wrote. I loved turning my words into melodies—it felt like the beginning of something special.
Your new single “cU” is out now. What was the inspiration/story behind the track?
cU is really personal to me. It’s about those moments when someone you’ve lost shows up in your dreams. It’s such a bittersweet feeling because, for a moment, it feels so real, and you just want to hold onto it. I wanted to capture that mix of comfort and sadness—how dreams can be this beautiful escape but also a reminder of what’s gone.
Where did you record the track, and who produced it?
I recorded cU in Peru with my incredibly talented producer, David Cabrera Morillos. It was the perfect place to record the song, since the melody and rhythm has Latin influences!
Do you have any interesting, funny, or memorable stories from the recording sessions?
During one session, we were trying different sounds and one melody ended up sounding like an alarm clock. We realized how perfectly it fit the song’s dreamlike theme, and it ended up inspiring part of the rhythm!
Did you use any particular instruments, microphones, or recording equipment to help you get a particular sound/tone for the record?
The cool thing about cU is that it was recorded while I was traveling, so we had to work with limited resources. That limitation actually made the process more creative—we had to think outside the box and make the most of what we had, which gave the song a unique, raw energy.
Was it a difficult song to write?
I had the initial idea for the song waking up from a dream, and when I’m inspired, I write songs fairly quickly. Later, when the instrumental was ready, it was so catchy that it made it even easier to complete the track.
Which of your tracks hear you at your:
- a) Happiest? cU!
- b) Angriest? Lately I’m not Me
- c) Most reflective? You Should Go
What two things do you hope to have achieved once you have left the stage?
Honestly, I just want people to leave with a good feeling and hopefully spark a sense of possibility or motivation in someone to pursue whatever they want.
Do you have any favoured stage instruments, effects, pedals, microphones, etc.?
I have a go-to mic – SHURE SM58.
Where is your hometown, and could you please describe it in five words?
Toronto—diverse, vibrant, inspiring, artistic, welcoming.
How do you look after your voice?
Hydration and warmups. I also have a humidifier in my room and avoid overusing my voice – although it’s pretty hard when I want to sing every second of the day!
You are given the opportunity to write the score for a film adaptation of a novel that you enjoy. Which novel is it and why?
I’d choose Gone with the Wind. The story has so much emotion and drama, and I think the music could really bring those moments to life.
Who are some of your musical influences? Do you have any recommendations?
I’m inspired by artists like Ryan Tedder, Finneas, and Billie Eilish, but I also find inspiration in a wide variety of songs, not just specific artists. Different melodies, lyrics, and sounds can spark creativity in unexpected ways. If you’re looking for recommendations, I’d say try different genres!
Do you have any live dates planned in the UK/Europe in 2025?
Nothing confirmed, but it’s on my bucket list!
Do you have any future music releases planned for 2025?
Yes, I’m working on an EP that experiments with new sounds. It’s still in the early stages, but I’m really excited about it.
What makes Lyubov Kay happy, and what makes you unhappy?
Creating music that connects with people makes me happy. On the other hand, I’m unhappy when I feel like I could be doing more or when I’m uninspired. Thankfully, I have really creative and inspiring people around me that get me out of that phase!
