Intense Brit heavyweights, PERPETUAL PARADOX, are braced to make a severe impact with their forthcoming debut album, ‘Deathwish’, out Friday 27th June 2025. The commanding riff slayers will also reveal their unstoppable new single and video, Backbone Of Existence, on Friday 20th June 2025. We spoke to the band about their new music and more:
Who is in Perpetual Paradox, how did you meet, and what do you play?
It all started with Jorge getting a post up on Facebook to form a band! Andre also worked at Jorge’s workplace at the time, and they became friends after Andre blasted some Black Sabbath! Adrian responded to the Facebook post, same as Oliver…and Will, we kidnapped him from another band he played bass for after he admitted to us he was actually a drummer (and we needed one after the previous one left us).
Adrian Caucelo – Vocals
Oliver Miles – Lead Guitar
Jorge Nunes – Rhythm Guitar
André de Barros – Bass
Will Armstrong – Drums
What is your earliest musical memory?
Jorge – I think I was around 6 turning 7, and I used to close the living room door and blast a Greatest Hits 2 VHS cassette of Queen!
Ollie – Probably memorising the lyrics to Eminem’s Lose Yourself when I was like 7.
When did you begin songwriting?
Since we formed the band, it was around the early stage of lockdown pretty much. Although Oliver joined just before we recorded Monophobia, until then it was me and Adrian only really. Will joined us right after we released Monophobia.
You will release your debut album ‘Deathwish’ on Friday 27th June 2025. How did you want to approach the making of the album?
We aimed at blending all our major influences, but then turned it up a notch, by combining technical metalcore with elements of death metal and a lot of groove. We wanted to make sure that every track was well appreciated by all metalheads around the globe.
Where did you record the album and who produced it?
Deathwish was recorded, mixed, and mastered at Tide Studios, with Marvin handling production.
Do you have any interesting, funny, or memorable stories from the album recording sessions?
The recording process was intense and transformative, with each member growing significantly during the sessions. It was a very efficient, short affair – we wish there were some memorable stories. We’re pretty sure the studio we recorded the drums in is haunted though.
Did you use any particular instruments, microphones, recording equipment to help you get a particular sound/tone for the record?
Honestly our sound/tone is all from the amazing hands of Marvin at Tide Studios. We told him what we were looking for and he nailed it! We recorded real drums at Shaken Oak studios and then used various plugins for guitars and bass. Jorge uses his signature Old Bones pickups and Ollie relies on his Legendary Siren set. Andre plays through his Dingwall. Streamlined setup basically.
Which of your new album tracks hear you at your a) happiest, b) angriest, and c) most reflective?
Happiest: “Unhealable Wounds”
Angriest: “Ash and Blood”
Most Reflective: “Into the Void”
Was it a difficult album to write?
Yes, the process was challenging but rewarding, involving significant personal and collective growth. We all wanted to reach the limit of our own capabilities!
Who designed the album artwork?
Every band member gave his input for the design and we found an amazing artist on FIVERR who took the challenge!
Your new single ‘Backbone of Existence’ will be released on Friday 20th June 2025. What was the story/inspiration behind the track?
For some reason, when I compose, I feel like a certain theme can be related to the riff and right after I wrote Backbone of Existence something hit me about the reality of what humankind really is, what’s our purpose, is life fair? – Jorge
The single is accompanied by an official music video. What was the thought process behind the video and who directed it?
We decided to work with Shaun Hodson of Loki Films for both Ash and Blood and Backbone of Existence as we’ve seen his previous work and loved the way he captures the essence of what each song is about!
What two things do you hope to have achieved once you have left the stage?
First of all to make sure that everyone that watches us has the best time! We all feed on crowd energy and we love when we see mosh pits, circle pits, headbanging, you name it! Second, to impress those who become our fans, we can’t keep doing this without them!
Do you have any favoured stage instruments, effects, pedals, microphones, etc.?
Jorge and Ollie would die for their Jackons! They make the sexiest guitars, period! Adrian built our live rack and IEM rack which is full of cool gear that none of us but him understand and couldn’t perform without. Same with our lighting rig. Andre loves his Dingwall. Ollie’s Quad Cortex is essential for him too.
Where is your hometown and could you please describe it in five words?
We are all based in London, UK, but we were all born in different countries, so having London in common we would say: diverse, historic, dynamic, inspiring…BEER!
How do you look after your voices?
Only Adrian sings/screams, but he warms up/down frequently and practices good technique in his own time.
You are given the opportunity to write the score for a film adaptation of a novel that you enjoy. Which novel is it and why?
The Expanse – great series of books and the film could do with some shred – ollie
Who are some of your musical influences? Do you have any recommendations?
The band draws inspiration from a range of artists, here’s a few:
Adrian: Bad Omens
Will: Iron Maiden
Oliver: Megadeth
Jorge: Lamb of God, Gojira
André: Electric Wizard
Do you have any live dates in the UK/Europe for 2025?
Yes, upcoming shows include:
6th June – London, Facedown 21st June – London, Misdommar Murder Fest
12th July – London, The Black Heart
13th July – Bournemouth, Bear Cave
18th July – London, New Cross Inn
And about 5-6 more that we can’t reveal just yet.
What makes Perpetual Paradox happy and what makes you unhappy?
The band finds joy in performing live and connecting with audiences. Some challenges include navigating the complexities of the music industry and maintaining cohesion amidst diverse musical influences, but overall we love what we do.
