Rising star Sophie Grey. has released her brand new EP “Just Another Sonic Monday™”, via Cherrytree Music Company. As she prepares to support STING in Europe and the UK, we spoke to her about her new music and more:
When did you begin songwriting?
I feel like I’ve been songwriting my whole life. I started playing classical piano at 4 years old. I began to compose my own songs around 12 years old with simple arrangements – usually just me and the piano. During the pandemic, I learned how to produce and began to release my music publicly.
What is your earliest musical memory?
One of my earliest musical memories was when I first heard the pianist Liberace. I loved his vibrant clothes and playful yet impressive piano playing skills. I would listen to his music all the time, especially while I was staying at my grandma’s house in the summers. He was such an amazing performer.
You have released your new single ‘On Hold’. What was the story/inspiration behind the track?
“On Hold” is a fun twist on today’s society’s customs of leaving people on read (“on hold”). It’s about when someone leads you on, you are with them but not entirely, because labels haven’t been assigned. So, they string you along. But, this song isn’t sad, it’s empowering the person who’s been left on hold. Time to leave that situation and preserve self worth!
Where did you record the single and who produced it?
I write, produce, and arrange all of my songs. This song was written at my kitchen table. I recorded it in my studio.
Do you have any interesting, funny or memorable stories from the recording sessions?
I produced the track about 2 months before recording vocals to it. I guess you could say I left the track “On Hold” for a bit.
Did you use any particular instruments, microphones, recording equipment to help you get a particular sound/tone for the record?
I use a variety of sounds that I create on my DAW. I knew I wanted to create a live-sounding electric bass in the verses that then goes into a deep synth bass in the choruses. I love to play around with different bass sounds and synth sounds throughout all my songs.
Was it a difficult song to write?
After I finished the production of the track, I would listen to it in the car and on my headphones, and I wasn’t inspired, at the time, to write anything to it. So I left it. But, about 2 months later, when I was flipping through my tracks, I heard it again, and wrote the entire melody and lyrics that day. Sometimes inspiration just comes like that.
In addition, you will be touring the UK and Europe as a special guest for Sting. How did that opportunity arise? How are you feeling about the tour?
I am so excited and honoured to be supporting Sting on his Sting 3.0 tour. I’m very honoured that he likes my music and chose me to open. I’m so excited! It’s going to be a great time.
Which of your tracks hear you at your a) happiest, b) angriest and c) most reflective?
Great question. I would say all of them have emotional ups and downs throughout. I think, depending on how I’m feeling that day, the song conveys a different emotion.
Do you have any further music releases planned for 2025?
My new EP “Just Another Sonic Monday ™” came out May 30th and I’m so excited for everyone to hear it. I can’t wait for those coming to the shows to hear it live.
What two things do you hope to have achieved once you have left the stage?
I hope I’m able to make people feel the amount of joy I feel when I’m performing for them.
Do you have any favoured stage instruments, effects, pedals, microphones etc?
It has to be my keytar- it’s a part of me. Literally never leaves my back. It appears a LOT throughout my show. And of course my robot “File Collins” who is also entertaining the crowd with me during my live set.
The single is accompanied by an official music video. What was the thought process behind the video and who directed it?
The video is directed by Maximilian Stafford. “On Hold” is fierce and firm, I’m not being left on hold anymore. So I wanted the video to encapsulate those feelings while also being true to myself. This video is inviting the audience to enter my world, which is familiar yet foreign at the same time; comfortable and uncomfortable simultaneously.
Where is your hometown and could you please describe it in five words?
My hometowns are Kansas City and Los Angeles – Burbank, California to be exact. In five words: Small Town, big city feel.
How do you look after your voice?
By staying hydrated
You are given the opportunity to write the score for a film adaptation of a novel that you enjoy. Which novel is it and why?
I’d have to say The Shining, but I’m already a big fan of the score of that one.
Who is in your touring band and what do they play? Or do you tour solo?
My touring band is me and my robot File Collins. I will be singing and playing the keytar.
Who are some of your musical influences? Do you have any recommendations?
My top favorite musical influences are Tame Impala, TOTO, and The Carpenters. I recommend all of them. They all have amazing musicianship and their songs are fantastic.
What makes Sophie Grey. happy and what makes you unhappy?
What makes me happy is having the privilege of doing what I love to do: Write and perform my music for people. What makes me unhappy is traffic in Los Angeles.
