Emerging from the underground with a sound that is as raw as it is resonant, enigmatic metalcore artist OBELISK is set to release his captivating debut album, Brushed By Darkness, on Friday 12th December 2025. Preceding the album, the blistering new single, Working Class Zero, will drop on Friday 10th October 2025. The mysterious figure spoke to JLTT:
Think it must be early in primary school where the music teacher is playing piano, that’s about as far back as I can think!
When did you begin songwriting?
In my very first band when I was 14! I played drums but it was mostly me and the guitarist that wrote all the tunes!
You have your debut album ‘Brushed By Darkness’ released on Friday 12th December 2025. How did you want to approach the making of the album?
So the approach centred around me playing every instrument and performing all the vocals. It had always been an idea/dream to do a full album like this and I thought it was the right time!
Where did you record the album and who produced it?
Recorded guitars and synths at my flat, and then recorded drums and vocals at Gracenote studio in Dunfermline! Dominic Hardy mixed and mastered the tracks!
Do you have any interesting, funny or memorable stories from the recording sessions?
Outside of constant South Park and Brian badonde anecdotes. One day I was reading my comments from fans on Instagram and one of the comments read just “enter me” I was laughing for about 10 minutes.
Did you use any particular instruments, microphones, recording equipment to help you get a particular sound/tone for the record?
For most guitar parts I used an Ltd 1008 ec 8 string, and a Gibson Les Paul 2005 black beauty! All other synths and strings were all stock logic, kind of wanting to show you can create a great piece of music with stock stuff!
Which of your new album tracks hear you at your a) happiest, b) angriest and c) most reflective?
Tragically Designed is probably the happiest! Definitely a dancier Metalcore tune.
The next single working class zero is the angriest for sure.
And the last song smiling politely is the most reflective!
Who were the musicians who were on the album with you?
It’s all me!
Does the album’s title have a specific meaning/significance?
The songs all kind of tell a tale of negative experiences that have passed me by but left an imprint, so the name brushed by darkness really fit!
Was it a difficult album to write?
Not at all! I kind of wrote all the songs to see where it was going and boom, all came together! The hardest part was deciding what songs fit and didn’t fit!
Who designed the album artwork?
My artist Faust Fisher! She is a fantastic up and coming artist! https://www.instagram.com/faustfisherart?igsh=NnQzdjJ1a2QydW8x here is her link!
Where is your hometown and could you please describe it in five words?
Apologies! Gonna have to keep the hometown on the down low for the whole mystery thing!
How do you look after your voice?
I tend to drink a lot of throat coat which is a great tea, and I don’t push myself when it’s needed. Just like in the gym or sport, you don’t go 100% all the time.
Do you have any live dates planned in the UK/Europe in 2025/2026?
None so far! But playing live next year should be a thing!
What two things do you hope to have achieved once you have left the stage?
That everyone was entertained to the best of my ability, and everyone feels that little bit closer!
Do you have any favoured stage instruments, effects, pedals, microphones etc?
I’m gonna have to find one! It will be the first time hitting the stage as a frontman! So let’s hope I have a favoured mic by then!
You are given the opportunity to write the score for a film adaptation of a novel that you enjoy. Which novel is it and why?
It would be for a different adaptation of ready player one. In the book he picks Japanese Spider-Man’s mech for that reason alone, and that’s the scene I’d write for.
The song is an aggressive bitter song about the situation of the working class. Also, it talks about the patronising way we are looked at by the ‘elite’ society.
Who are some of your musical influences? Do you have any recommendations?
For this I’d say BMTH, Electric Callboy, Sleep Token, and Green Day!
What makes Obelisk happy and what makes you unhappy?
Being able to do what I want and express myself however I feel! And Rangers fc, anything to do with them makes me sad.
