Gus White is a Wiltshire-based folk musician, best known for his talents behind the producer’s chair with some of the UK’s most exciting singer-songwriters. He has released ‘After So Long’, the final single from his self-produced and masterful debut, ‘For Now, Anyway’ which is released on Friday 14th November 2025. We spoke to him here:

What is your earliest musical memory?

On the school run, I was listening to’ Rain Drops Are Falling On My Head’ on cassette. The cassette burst and I had to wind it back in with a pencil.

When did you begin songwriting?

When I was in school. My voice broke, and I couldn’t sing classical anymore, so I started a band and I was the songwriter. The songs were terrible.

You have your debut album ‘For Now, Anyway’ released on 14th November 2025. How did you want to approach the making of the album?

Just my usual recording process – get a bunch of excellent people together and record it as live as possible. Few overdubs, and then pass it through the tape machine.

Could you tell us what it was like recording, producing, mixing, and mastering the entire album at your home studio?

Sometimes heaven, sometimes hell. It’s much easier to produce other artists because you have more objectivity. When it’s your own art, you question everything and it takes 10 times longer. Still the highs are worth it. The comradery of the recording session! The moment you listen to the finished mixes and say, ”yeah, it’s done.”

Did you use any particular instruments, microphones, recording equipment to help you get a particular sound/tone for the record?

My Otari MTR-90 24 track tape machine is a big part of the sound. Everything goes through it. Imagine the difference between a digital photograph and a film photograph. That will get you in the ball park.

Which of your new album tracks hear you at your a) happiest, b) angriest and c) most reflective?

  • Happiest? Terrible Things. It’s a toungue and cheek number about men in therapy.
  • Angriest? Bad News. It’s a cathartic and chaotic letting off of steam!
  • Most reflective? Country Song, I think.

Who were the musicians who were on the album with you?

Lloyd Haines – drummer

Alex Haines (twin) – Guitarist (Welsh boys)

Sam Crooks – Bass Player (best Canadian export after maple syrup)

Edward Cross – Piano (fellow Wiltshire boy)

Does the album’s title have a specific meaning/significance?

It’s named after one of the songs. I like the ‘knowing’ playfulness of it. It says, “this is exactly how I feel, for now, anyway…”

Was it a difficult album to write?

Not particularly. I had a lot to process at the time.

Who designed the album artwork?

I found the photo in a drawer in my parents house. It was degraded by damp or something. I took one look at it and thought, ‘damn, I better make an album’.

Where is your hometown and could you please describe it in five words?

Wiltshire. Sleepy countryside village – pubs, community.

How do you look after your voice?

I don’t!

Do you have any live dates planned in the UK/Europe in 2025/2026?

Yes! I am doing an instore at Sound Knowledge CD shop in Marlborough 14th November, 6.30pm on the release day of the record! You can find details here

I am also cooking up an idea to do a tour of town museums!

One of the tracks is the single ‘After So Long’ which is out now. What was the story/inspiration behind the song?

It’s the final letting go of something you’ve been pretending you are over, but you keep realising you’re not!
