Janet Devlin Reclaims Her Independence And Captures The Mood Of A Nation With Defiant Anthem & Fan Favourite ‘Working For The Man’

Amid an ongoing cost-of-living crisis, country star Janet Devlin’s gritty new anthem ‘Working For The Man’ arrives both abruptly and timely, capturing the mood of a nation. Unearthed from a less confident period during a writing session before her debut album, she now brings the track to life with her signature Nashville edge, reflecting on the life experiences that shaped this fan favourite.

Hidden in Janet’s unreleased archive for several years like undiscovered gold, ‘Working For The Man’ has long lived on through her beloved live shows, which are celebrated for their lively Americana feel, audience participation and intimate atmosphere. Now, fans no longer have to catch it live to hear it, and it is just as riotous and brilliant on record as it is under the heat of the stage lights.

From the powerful opening line, Janet invites listeners into a sonic landscape of thrashing drums and jangling guitars, laying the rickety foundations for her vocals, at their most authentic and twang-laden, to take centre stage. Building gradually into a rousing crescendo, the track evokes the restless search for self-identity within an unforgiving system. It mirrors the pace and urgency of the relentless “rat race” she has experienced firsthand as an independent artist.

Reflecting on the song’s origins, Janet recalls watching her parents struggle while she was growing up, an experience that continues to shape her perspective today.

They both had full-time jobs while raising four kids under five years old. I saw how hard they worked for what we had in life, and just how exhausted they were because of it. In a lot of ways, I felt angry. Angry at the system we’re living in. That they could work tirelessly just to put money in someone else’s pocket. Obviously, the system hasn’t changed since I wrote it. That’s why the song still feels so true and relevant to me all these years later.”

Originally penned with Jack Savoretti on a rainy afternoon in a studio on Portobello Road when Janet was just 17, ‘Working For The Man’ has finally found its musical home. Co-produced by Janet alongside Jurgen Korduletsch and Rick Chambers, the track channels a sense of passion and lived-in experience that fuels this powerful and honest song, one that has refused to fade and is set to resonate with many.
