Your new album ‘Love Revolution’ is out now. How did you want to approach the making of the album?
I had the idea that every song would have its own vibe, reflecting the feelings and words in each song. Also, also I really wanted to create a piece of work that would stand up against music trends.
Where did you record the album and who produced it?
I recorded the album at Nettlengham Audio in Vancouver, Washington USA — Producer: Kevin Nettlengham — Executive Producer: Jim Erivin — Label: Warrior Records
You also have the single “Let The Player Play”. What was the story/inspiration behind the track?
Well, staying in true Rock & Roll fashion, it was about dating and all facts are true, as said in lyrics. The idea was that I had to search everywhere any anywhere to find love…the earth, sky, and outer space, if I need to, lol.
You are given the opportunity to write the score for a film adaptation of a novel that you enjoy. Which novel is it and why?
I love the writings of Shakespeare, as cliché as that might sound, and would pick Romeo & Juliet because I call my music tragically sexy. I could write for days about the beauty of that love story.
What is your earliest musical memory?
When I was 5 years old, I heard my aunt and uncle playing with their band in my grandmother’s front yard in Los Angeles, California. I was instantly changed and from that day on I knew I would be musician.
Do you have any favoured stage instruments, effects, pedals, microphones etc?
I love Jumbo Acoustic guitars which is my primary instrument. On stage Guitars are Gibson J-185, EC Blues King (1999), Breedlove AJ250SF plus Jumbo, Breedlove Oregon Concerto CE (Jeff Bridges Model). I am a Pro Breedlove endorsed Artist. Amplification includes Fishman Amp Loudbox Artist BT 120, Live Microphones (Wired) Neumann 105 supercardioid, or my (wired) Sennheiser E965 / (wireless) Sennheheiser e835 G4 ew100, (in-ear) Monitors 64 Audio NIO.
Where is your hometown and could you please describe it in five words?
Home is Vancouver, Washington USA (although i grew up in Los Angeles, California). It’s beautiful in the rain.
Do you have any interesting, funny or memorable stories from the album recording sessions?
The album was a pleasure to make. There was a feeling that we were creating a special collection of music.
Do you have any plans for live shows in Europe/UK in 2024?
I would love to return to the Europe/UK in 2024. I love performing there! My team is negotiating my return and I cant wait!
Interestingly, you have previously toured with some friends of mine Nine Below Zero. How did that opportunity arise and do you have any memories/stories from the tour?
Nine Below Zero are such a class act! Dennis Greaves and his band mates were just a pleasure to tour with and I appreciate their giving me the opportunity to share my music with their fans. They’re a true gem of the UK…all wonderful musicians and good humans.
Who plays with you on the album?
Many talented musicians participated in my album, all from the local area (Vancouver, Washington and Portland, Oregon USA). Please see the album credits.
How do you look after your voice?
Cigarettes, a bit of whiskey, and tacos.
Was it a difficult album to write?
Truthfully, no. I love writing and always have new music and ideas being created.
Who did you write with on record?
For the most part, I write alone, as far as the initial melodic ideas and lyrics. But, there are some music co-writes with Jean Pierre Garau and Wayne Thompson.
What makes Al Perez happy and what makes you unhappy?
Happiness comes from my family, my Faith, love, and of course music. Unhappiness comes from negative people.
