Ant Thomaz is a Glasgow-based singer-songwriter and musician from southern Louisiana’s Bayou region, recognized for his eclectic musical style that blends folk, soul, pop, zydeco, and rock influences. Having recently released his new single ‘Believe’, we felt that it was the perfect time to have a chat:

When did you begin singing/songwriting?

I began writing songs when I was 12 years old, but I was a loner, so I didn’t start singing until I was around 19.

What is your earliest musical memory?

Experiencing Kings of Leon in concert remains an unforgettable musical moment; it ignited a desire within me to sing, create, and take to the stage.

You have your new single ‘Believe’ out now. What was the story/inspiration behind the track?

The inspiration for my song “Believe” arises from my personal experiences and is shaped by my daily roles as a father (especially with my daughter Gaia)partner, friend and artist.

I believe this message resonates with individuals on their unique paths of resilience and self-discovery, emphasizing the importance of managing life’s challenges while maintaining a hopeful perspective. Life is wonderful when you choose to perceive it that way.

Where did you record the single and who produced it?

We recorded at the home studio of our friend Chris Gordon. This allowed us to concentrate and achieve a significant amount of work in a short timeframe.

Do you have any interesting, funny or memorable stories from the recording sessions?

We foster a light-hearted atmosphere during our sessions. Working with Chris feels like having an older brother by your side. Although we achieve substantial progress, our discussions frequently explore various subjects. We often engage in casual conversations about rubbish football matches or laugh at why we put unnecessary chords in the songs that we forget before every show to keep us on our toes.

Did you use any particular instruments, microphones, recording equipment to help you get a particular sound/tone for the record?

I play my Eastcoast M1SM acoustic guitar because it offers both acoustic and ukulele tones, and I utilize the HCT-500/1-SB Violin Bass CT for a rich bass experience, along with a Roland keyboard for synthesizer sounds.

Was it a difficult song to write?

Yes, writing the song “Believe” was truly challenging, and I recognized the importance of exploring my own identity. Growing up in a culturally diverse family, I realized the need to adjust my approach to seamlessly integrate these various influences; therefore, I decided to take my time and not rush the process of self-discovery. The experiences from my childhood became the central theme of my album. As I developed the album, I found that its fundamental elements were closely tied to the beauty of simplicity and genuine expression.

Which of your tracks hear you at your a) happiest, b) angriest and c) most reflective?

I believe that each song captures a wide range of feelings since I tend to write from a third-person perspective. A- The Good Times Roll B-Mind for Sale C- Believe

Do you have any further music releases planned for 2025?

Yes, I intend to release two additional singles before the end of the year, followed by an album in 2026.

What two things do you hope to have achieved once you have left the stage?

I aim to deliver my utmost Best performance…ensuring the audience enjoy dance and sing along brings me great satisfaction.

Do you have any favoured stage instruments, effects, pedals, microphones etc?

I love my small East Coast guitar its my fav brand.

How do you look after your voice?

I enjoy ginger tea, peppermint tea, and I practice vocal warm-ups with my band. Additionally, I make sure to stay hydrated, and living close to nature offers a peaceful atmosphere. Honestly, I don’t engage in much conversation unless necessary, which helps conserve energy for performances.

You are given the opportunity to write the score for a film adaptation of a novel that you enjoy. Which novel is it and why?

I would like to compose a score for “The Alchemist” by Paulo Coelho. In my view, it is the greatest book of all time. I appreciate how the protagonist learns to believe in himself and comprehend the elements surrounding him. Once attuned to the universe, his understanding profoundly transformed his life for the better. It illustrates the concept of mind over matter, as he was able to remain present in each moment, and the abundance he received was truly magical.

Where is your hometown and could you please describe it in five words?

Glasgow, Scotland. Five words: Best town in the world

Do you have any live dates in the UK/Europe planned for 2025?

Indeed, we have a 50-date tour planned across Scotland, England, Ireland, and a few dates in Europe as well.

What makes Ant Thomaz happy and what makes you unhappy?

Numerous factors contribute to my happiness, including spending time with family and friends, songwriting, enjoying nature, laughing, and practicing meditation. Conversely, I find procrastination, gossip, bullying, and the judgment of others to be sources of unhappiness.
