Brit riff merchants Buried In Bermuda have released their new single ‘Torment’ and its accompanying music video. We spoke to the band:

Who is in Buried In Bermuda, how did you meet and what do you play?

We are Gilles (Lead Vocals and Lead Guitar), Kyle (Rhythm Guitar), Alex Bowyer (Drums) and Ben Hussey (Bass Guitar and Backing Vocals). Gilles and Kyle originally met and formed the band at Factory Studios in Bristol back in 2021, after a few band member changes over the years, we’re extremely excited about this current lineup.

What is your earliest musical memory?

Gilles: My mum was a semi-pro singer in a band, so I vaguely remember her singing when I was a toddler!

Kyle: When I was very young 3-4 years old maybe, my dad was in a punk band and he’d let me play on the guitar, I actually wanted to be a drummer early on but I think for practicality reasons my mum wasn’t super keen.

Alex: Seeing Mumford and Sons at Green Man festival in 2010.

Ben: Getting a drum kit (yes started on drums) for my 3rd birthday.

When did you begin songwriting?

Gilles: I used to write rap lyrics when I was a teenager, so probably from about 14 onwards, but in terms of rock/metal, not until when we formed the band in 2021.

Kyle: in the womb

Alex: I began writing songs when I was about 16 and started playing in bands for the first time.

Ben: I have been in bands since a teenager, writing songs (if you could call them that) from the age of 13/14. I think, however, since 17/18 is when they started to be serious songs, with some understanding of melody and harmony.

Your new single ‘Torment’ is out now. What was the story/inspiration behind the track?

‘Torment’ was written to be somewhat interpretative in meaning to the listener (as with most of our tracks). But it was specifically meant to portray dystopian and post-apocalyptic themes throughout, and presented in a chaotic, unpredictable and aggressive format. Further inspiration for the song was taken from humanity’s obsession with war and destruction, and the subsequent consequences of the torment it causes.

Where did you record the song and who produced it?

Between Pirate Studios in Bristol and the home studio of our producer – Dan Ross.

Do you have any interesting, funny or memorable stories from the recording sessions?

Gilles and Ben recording gang vocals for backings was hilarious.

Did you use any particular instruments, microphones, recording equipment to help you get a particular sound/tone for the record?

Ben has some wild and wacky pedals which made it onto the track. A lot of the tones came from digital simulation and we went very over the top with bass and guitar tones, as this suited the energy of the song!

Which of your tracks hear you at your a) happiest, b) angriest and c) most reflective?

Happiest: We don’t do happy…

Angriest: Torment

Most Reflective: Until We Meet Again (future single)

Was it a difficult song to write?

Not particularly, but it did evolve over time and we even changed the entire lyrics after having toured with the original version. It hits bigger and better now!

Do you have any further new music releases planned for 2025?

Yes. At least two, possibly three, new singles. We are recording later this month (June) for an August release of our next track.

What two things do you hope to have achieved once you have left the stage?

To stick in the crowd’s mind and to leave them wanting more, having given everything into the performance.

Do you have any favoured stage instruments, effects, pedals, microphones etc?

Ben: For me it is my trusty Fender Jazz bass, through a driven sansamp into my vintage Hartke head. Throw in a Justin Chancellor Fuzz Wah for some extra flavour here and there and you pretty much have my stage tone.

Alex: Drums and a Tama Dyna Sync double pedal

Kyle: Though I’m not using it as much these days I still love an octave pedal. It just beefs everything up.

Where is your hometown and could you please describe it in five words?

We are all originally from different places, but having formed in Bristol:

Music

Art

Freedom

Expression

Raves

How do you look after your voices?

A Vocal Zone herbal lemon and honey tea before and after performing!

You are given the opportunity to write the score for a film adaptation of a novel that you enjoy. Which novel is it and why?

The Bourne Identity by Robert Ludlam. Our fast-paced alt-rock/metal would be great for the fight and chase scenes.

The single is accompanied by an official music video. What was the thought process behind the video and who directed it?

Our music video Director Liv Kelly came up with the original concept and directed and produced it via her company ‘Nana Giffin’.

Who are some of your musical influences? Do you have any recommendations?

To name but a few:

Myles Kennedy

Mark Tremonti

Chris Cornell

Eddie Van Halen

Flea

Justin Chancellor

Gavin Harrison

Underoath

Do you have any live dates in the UK/Europe for 2025?

Yeah! Quite a few thankfully – these are the pick of the bunch:

10th Aug: Firevolt Festival

6th Sept: Norwich

9th – 17th Oct: UK Tour

What makes Buried In Bermuda happy and what makes you unhappy?

Happy: Fat riffs, Great gigs, beer, curry and festival slots.

Unhappy: Broken guitar strings, sinusitis, poverty, climate change, bees dying
