Cameron Saul is an artist of natural sensibilities, with a deep passion for our beautiful planet and life in all its forms. He will release his debut album ‘Simeo’ on Friday 10th October 2025. He chatted to us about the record and more:
What is your earliest musical memory?
My mum playing piano Clare De Lune by Debussy downstairs while I’m in bed going to sleep.
When did you begin songwriting?
When I was 18 years old living in Paris. I couldn’t afford to buy my father a birthday present so I wrote him a song and really enjoyed the process and could see how much it meant to us both when I sung it to him. So, I kept writing.
You have your debut album ‘Simeo’ released on 10th October 2025. How did you want to approach the making of the album?
I never really thought of writing an album, it was more a case of realising I had lots of material, exploring many of the issues that matter to me, born out of many of my life’s most vivid moments and then curating an album from that material.
Where did you record the album and who produced it?
We recorded the album at Smallpond Studios in Brighton and it was produced by Fink in Berlin.
Do you have any interesting, funny or memorable stories from the recording sessions?
It was recorded during lockdown and I was the first person allowed in to record after everything had been closed for quite a long time so there was that strangely quiet, eery feeling initially. Then things gradually warmed up as more and more artists started recording again. I loved the process.
Who were the musicians who performed on the album with you?
Drums Tim Thornton
Bass George Baldwin
Keys David Griffiths
Cello Freya Souter
Viola Matthew Souter
Violin Karin Souter
Mandolin Stanley Katzlehoff
Double Bass Jack Loudoun
Did you use any particular instruments, microphones, recording equipment to help you get a particular sound/tone for the record?
I use a space echo paddle which creates the smoky tape delay effect from early reggae music which I love. Fink turned that into a signature sound on the record.
Which of your new album tracks hear you at your a) happiest, b) angriest and c) most reflective?
A) Bahia
B) Say His Name
C) Thunder Through Rain
You have also released the Fink remix of ‘Bahia’. What was the story/inspiration behind the track?
Bahia was written on a tropical island off the coast of Brazil and was born out of a solo mission to a very remote and special place that is also the heartland of Afro Brazilian culture. The song is about stepping into the unknown and meeting Life in doing so. It’s about freedom and adventure.
The single is accompanied by an official music video. What was the thought process behind the video and who directed it?
The video was directed by a brilliant and talented filmmaker called Mayara Marjorie, a friend of mine that I met in the region of Bahia and who is an incredibly intuitive and sensitive filmmaker. I knew that I wanted her to create the video long before I asked her, not because I had concept for it but because I so trusted her artistic instinct. We were joined by two other brilliant filmmakers Loiro Cunha and Bernardo Nielsen, and the whole trip was an adventure, totally spontaneous and we just explored and created in an extraordinary, beautiful place in a remote part of the coastline shrouded with Atlantic rainforest.
Does the album’s title have a specific meaning/significance?
Yes, Simeo means ‘warmth’ in Lughisu, the tribal dialect in the village where I lived in the mountains.
Was it a difficult album to write?
No, the writing comes when the words need to be written and explored, they are born out of strong feelings and I don’t rush them.
Who designed the album artwork?
A very talented artist friend of mine Coco Demner from Studio Elastik.
Where is your hometown and could you please describe it in five words?
Brighton. Joyful, open, friendly, fun, creative.
How do you look after your voice?
By using honey from Alto Paraiso in Brazil.
Do you have any live dates planned in the UK/Europe in 2025/2026?
Yes we will be hosting album launches in Brighton and London in October and hopefully a mini UK/Europe tour.
What two things do you hope to have achieved once you have left the stage?
To have reached people emotionally and to have made them smile.
Do you have any favoured stage instruments, effects, pedals, microphones etc?
The space echo and Shure Beta 58a mic.
Who are some of your musical influences? Do you have any recommendations?
Nick Drake, Gilberto Gil, Milton Nascimento, Djavan, Fink, Nick Mulvey, Seth Lakeman, Ry X, Paul Simon, Kate Bush.
What makes Cameron Saul happy and what makes you unhappy?
Happy is a dancefloor with good friends and good records. Unhappy is not getting enough sleep!
