Canadian singer-songwriter Chloe Stroll has released her highly anticipated debut album ‘Bloom in the Break’. She kindly spoke to us here:
What is your earliest musical memory?
Singing in Disney’s Princess Jasmine costume holding a microphone while the piano played. I must’ve been three or four.
Your debut album Bloom In The Break is out now. How did you approach making it?
I focused on what message I wanted to send, and what I found to be really important. I kept picturing a flower blooming through broken glass and felt the image was strong and emphasized that we are made up of our obstacles, mistakes, flaws, and that as humans we are beautiful because of it. I wanted whoever listened to know they are not alone, they are heard and they are beautiful. That was the north star, and that helped me narrow down the songs for this album.
Where did you record the album and who produced it?
We recorded in LA, NYC and London. It was mainly produced. by Swagg R’Celious, Walter Afanasieff, and Kevin Bard
Any memorable or funny stories from the sessions?
So many – I was pregnant for much of the process, which made things intense and beautiful. I remember finishing “Home” at eight-and-a-half months pregnant, listening back in the studio and bursting into tears. I realized that I had just written my first song about my upcoming family. It was unexpectedly emotional in the best way.
Did you use any particular instruments or microphones to get the record’s sound?
Yes – we tested several microphones before settling on the right one. Instrumentation and mic choice varied by song to suit the vocal tone and emotional intent.
Which tracks show you at your: a) happiest, b) angriest, c) most reflective?
a) Without You — happiest b) I Stood My Ground — angriest c) You’re OK — most reflective
Does the album title have a specific meaning?
Yes — see Q2.
Was the album difficult to write?
It was emotionally demanding, it required vulnerability and deep reflection to get the lyrics and tone right.
Who designed the album artwork?
I did but of course with the support of a talented creative team of Phil Lee and the Untold team, who did an incredible job executing it.
Where is your hometown? Describe it in five words.
Montreal – comforting, cold (in winter), hockey, culture, amazing food.
How do you look after your voice?
Daily exercises (at least five minutes), plus cool-downs after big sessions. Like a muscle, you warm up and then stretch/care for it afterward.
Any live dates planned in the UK/Europe for 2025/2026?
Not yet – but I’m working on it!
What two things do you hope people take away after you leave the stage?
That their day was brighter and that they felt less alone – that the performance helped them through something.
Do you have favoured stage gear (in-ear monitors, pedals, mics)?
I can’t perform without my in-ear monitors – they put me in a focused bubble so I can find the emotion.
If you could score a film adaptation of a novel, which would it be?
I’m obsessed with A Court of Thorns and Roses and Fourth Wing right now – one of those would be insane. My music would fit well with romantic fantasy.
What inspired the single “I Stood My Ground”?
In life we always have moments when you feel unheard or when your values feel compromised. So this song is really about having the confidence to stand your ground while everything around you feels like it’s unravelling. Know your worth, know what you stand for, believe in it and fight for it.
Tell us about the “I Stood My Ground” video – concept and director.
I worked with the incredibly talented director Daniel Ryan. I wanted something raw and stripped-back that still felt strong – so we found this great place in Brooklyn which gave us this dark, intimate jazz/underground-club vibe that complements the song’s spirit.
Who are your musical influences? Any recommendations?
I look to artists like Adele, Whitney Houston, Lana Del Rey, Lewis Capaldi, Maggie Rogers, Hoizer, Billie Eilish. All these artists are themselves, singing music that is authentic to them and I think that is the most important thing you can do
What makes you happy — and what makes you unhappy?
My family makes me happiest. Asparagus makes me very unhappy.
