South African blues-rock guitarist and singer-songwriter Dan Patlansky is back with a brand new album ‘Movin’ On’ which is out now and an April 2024 headline UK Tour. He sat down with JLTT to tell us all about it:
Your new album ‘Movin On’ is out now. How did you want to approach the making of the record?
The vision for ‘Movin’ On’ from the get go was always to try make a record that completely mirrored a great live performance, with no any temptation to over produce the songs. We kept it too minimal takes to retain the energy and edge.
Where did you record it and who produced it?
We recorded the album at Drumheadz studios in Johannesburg which belongs to my drummer and co-producer Andy Maritz. It was produced by Andy and myself because we shared the vision of what we wanted the album to be.
Do you have any interesting, funny or memorable stories from the recording sessions?
The most memorable part of this recording was finally after years of searching was achieving a studio guitar sound that reflected the vision in my head that I’ve been lusting after for many years.
In addition, you have your single ‘Movin’ On’ which is out now. What was the inspiration/story behind the song?
Movin On was one of the first songs written for the album, and it’s about pushing through tough times regardless of the circumstances. As a kid my father used to always tell me “Keep movin on”. It’s a phrase that has stayed with me all of these years, and has served me very well.
What is your earliest musical memory?
Playing a tennis racquet to Jimi Hendrix’s ‘Voodoo Chile’ at about the age of 8 while my father was listening to the record.
Do you have any favoured stage instruments, effects, pedals, microphones?
Yes I’ve always been drawn to particular guitars for large periods because one really gets to understand the ins and outs of the particular instrument. For the last while its been my blue Fender Strat (63’ custom shop) paired with my Honeybee Amps 40 watt head. Its a combination that is very hard to beat for me.
Do you have any live plans for 2024 in the UK and Europe?
Yes I have an 8 date UK tour starting in early April covering most of the UK and ending with single show in Budapest. We will be returning to Europe in AUG/SEP to continue promoting the new record.
Who is in your touring band?
Greg Van Kerkhof- Bass Guitar/BV’s
Andy Maritz – Drums/BV’s
Will you have any support artists/special guests joining you for the live dates?
Yes I think it super important to have local supports at as many shows as possible. This time so far we have we have Ross Harding, Andy Sharrocks and Danny Bourassa (Manchester and Wolverhampton) and Leoni Jane Kennedy (London).
How do you look after your voice?
As much sleep as possible which can be tough to achieve sometimes. Loads of water, and minimal use of the vocal chords during the day.
What two things do you hope to have achieved once you have left the stage?
I want the audience to be out of breathe, and physically and emotionally drained. That’s the journey and the key thing I want to get across to a live crowd. We will be give every ounce every night.
Was it a difficult album to write?
Probably the easiest and most natural album to write ever for me. I think this was due to the fact I was writing with such a great group of guys. These guys happen to be my band and are fantastic song writers in their own right.
What makes Dan Patlansky happy and what makes you unhappy?
Having the opportunity to do what I love the most which is performing the b blues every night to a different audience , in-competency of people who are paid top do a job and are completely useless at it.
