Northampton garage-rock duo Fountain return with their high-octane new single ‘Son Of A Gun’, the second single to be taken from the upcoming EP Big Bag Of New Nothings, released on 13th January 2026. We spoke to the duo all about their new music and more:

Who is in Fountain, how did you meet and what do you play?

Jordan Noon Guitars and Vocals
Ally Wilkinson Drums and Backing Vocals

We had a previous band some years ago, but back in 2023 we reunited to start this band, both realising we had much more that we wanted to say.

What is your earliest musical memory?

(J) Forcing the family into suffering through a 9 year old’s living room gigs
(A) – My dad dropping off my drum kit to my schools’s year 6 ‘show and tell’ class, where i played an ACDC song in front of a class room.

When did you begin songwriting?

As Fountain, we began to write during the Winter of 2023. As collaborators, we started around 12 years ago!

You have your new EP ‘Big Bag Of New Nothings’ released in January 2026. How did you want to approach the making of the EP?

We decided to approach writing these songs in a slightly different way by simplifying our instrumental parts to allow certain elements to be more prominent and shine through. Ultimately affording us the ability to write a more compelling story within each song.

Where did you record the EP and who produced it?

Dulcetone Studios with the one and only Lee Russell

Do you have any interesting, funny or memorable stories from the recording sessions?

Recording sessions and everything around that always comes with laughter, but as for being in the studio, our Producer Lee Russell wouldn’t let Ally play his vintage Ludwig kit from the 60’s that has Raw hide heads on, because the drum heads are so sensitive and Ally beats the hell out of this kit, those heads wouldn’t stand a chance, and nobody wants to tussle with the Russell!

Did you use any particular instruments, microphones, recording equipment to help you get a particular sound/tone for the record?

The EP was recorded in an old chapel. So the architecture provides excellent acoustics and makes the audio capturing process feel pure and uncontaminated.

As far as weaponry goes! An original 1960s Gibson Firebird was used on all tracks but the chapel is like a musical time capsule with vintage instruments decorated all around so we have access to a hell of arsenal!

But all fantastic equipment aside, it was really down to the thousands of decisions we made as a band, producer and manager that was really how we brought these songs together. Without that the equipment couldn’t make us sound any better.

Which of your new album tracks hear you at your a) happiest, b) angriest and c) most reflective?

We would say that at our happiest. Our go to track would be “These Winds”, as with its conception allowed for the imagination to take long mentally explorative road trips (winks to encourage listeners to analyse the lyrics – Once it is available)

At our angriest, without question – “Dog”. We remember being in a foul mood the day that we wrote those lyrics. We were fed up with the way the world is going and wanted to write something nihilistic and rebellious as a means to verbally respond to the triggers that frustrate us.

And finally, the track we find to be most reflective is “Let’s Be Animals”. Vocally, we find it to be the most demanding and soulful. We believe that in order to effectively inject soul into a song, one has to look inward. To look inward you have to reflect. This track came with plenty of room to reflect!

Was it a difficult EP to write?

We would say that this EP was the easier to put together…. THIRD TIME’S A CHARM UHH. Working with our Producer Lee really enabled us to carefully build the songs from the ground up allowing the songs to deliver with more clarity on what we wanted to communicate. Allowing us to deliver with IMPACT.

Who designed the EP artwork?

Along with our manager Alex . We collectively conceptualised the artwork.

Does the EP title have any significance/special meaning?

(J)
The title itself is in reference to something my Grandfather used to say to tease me. By presenting me with a “Big Bag of New Nothings”. It was completely in jest but never left my thoughts. I started to consider its alternative uses and realised it can have multiple meaning and be open to interpretation. So, who can say to which meaning it truly applies….. Disappears in a plume of smoke

One of the tracks is the single ‘Son Of A Gun’. What was the story/inspiration behind the track?

Initially, our intentions were set the story within a Saloon during the times of the Old West. Although we decided translate it to present day and replace the setting with something more familiar…
A traditional British boozer that houses low life’s and has beens.

The track is accompanied by an official music video. What was the thought process behind the video and who directed it?

We decided to make it as straight and minimal as possible. Even down to its black and white theme. We wanted to capture a simple performance video which speaks to the primitive nature of the narrative behind the track.

Where is your hometown and could you please describe it in five words?

Northampton.

How do you look after your voices?

By going against every advisory way of looking after our voices.

Do you have any live dates planned in the UK/Europe in 2025/2026?

Maybe….. We are currently putting together the first run of shows for the tour AT THIS VERY MOMENT for early next year

What two things do you hope to have achieved once you have left the stage?

A copious amount of endorphins and an acknowledgment from the crowd that tells us they were thrilled to be a part of a historical moment.

Do you have any favoured stage instruments, effects, pedals, microphones etc?

(J) My preferred Six Stringed Lady is my 70s Mexican Fender Strat who is aptly named “Consuela”. (A) As for me, I can be extremely picky with what equipment I use… So I’d always take my Zildjian cymbals and DW5000 kick pedal, which always makes me feel at home.

You are given the opportunity to write the score for a film adaptation of a novel that you enjoy. Which novel is it and why?

We would love to work with on anything directed by Osgood Perkins and anything involving Daniel Pemberton, that guy has a stupendous ear when it comes to composition!

And also any of Cormac McCarthy’s works!

Who are some of your musical influences? Do you have any recommendations?

Ennio Morricone. Ever since ever since, we have wanted to capture the iconic Spaghetti Western Sound.

Modern influences, the face melting ferocity of Thee Oh Sees and the insightful story telling of Sun Kil Moon.

What makes Fountain happy and what makes you unhappy?

Naughty boys and girls that don’t support us by not coming to one our shows, following us on all platforms, subscribing, hitting the like button or buying our merch like good boys and girls…

Naturally we’re ‘people’ people. So we always talk to fans – whether that be as soon as we get off stage, someone sending us a DM or replying back to comments on our social media posts. Interaction with the fans, that is what makes us REALLY happy. It was fuels us.
