Soul-pop duo GeeJay craft songs with such an irresistible live feel that their music appeals right across the sonic spectrum. Their latest single ‘Murder’ is out now and they chatted to us about the track, their voices and more:
Who is in GeeJay and what do you play?
We are a duo, Gee does the vocals and arrangement, and Jay does the production! Jay plays the Piano, Saxophone and flute!
What is your earliest musical memory?
Gee – I remember my dad used to find it hard to put me to bed when I was a toddler, so he’d put on a party CD in the kitchen and we’d dance around until I’d be tired enough to conk out ha!
Jay – I remember my mum gave me a recorder to play when I was about 3 or 4 at home. I remember her saying at the end of the day that I’d taught myself how to play baa baa black sheep, and that I should start taking lessons.
When did you begin songwriting?
Gee – I started songwriting after I first moved to London when I was 19!
Jay – Hmm. I can’t really put my finger on when it was, but I remember sitting at the piano when I was about 12 and writing a song to show to my music teacher at school.
You have your new single ‘Murder’ out now. What was the story/inspiration behind the track?
The world seems to be in such a weird place at the moment – there’s such a huge amount of hate, division and destruction happening all around us. The feelings that this generated inside us inspired the track!
Where did you record the track and who produced it?
It was a very DIY thing – we got our drummer (Fin Millard) to record the drums at his house. The piano was recorded at The Crypt in North London down the road from us, and the rest (including vocals) was all recorded and mixed at home!
Do you have any interesting, funny or memorable stories from the recording sessions?
Sometimes tracks just fall into place – recording this was not only a blur, but it happened so quickly. The track took 2 weeks to write, record, mix, and master! Sometimes as artists we overthink elements and can spend months chiselling away, but this track just worked!
Did you use any particular instruments, microphones, recording equipment to help you get a particular sound/tone for the record?
Gee sounds great through a U47 – these vintage models cost tens of thousands of pounds, so instead we recorded her on a clone! The piano used on the track is a John Broadwood & Sons Barless Grand Piano. We’ve ended up using this very piano on 80% of our upcoming album. It’s not perfect, and has a couple of notes that ring out – this is what gives it its charm and character.
Which of your tracks hear you at your a) happiest, b) angriest and c) most reflective?
a) We’d say ‘Falling Into Place’ from our debut album
b) We’ve got a song called ‘Staring in the mirror’ about body dysmorphia – we feel that you can really hear Gee’s frustration coming through on this one.
c) We’d say ‘Murder’ is the most reflective of our songs, especially the intro part
Was it a difficult song to write?
‘Murder’ felt like it just slotted into place. Sometimes Gee can spend weeks crafting the wording for a particular line, but with this song the words just fell into place. The production, too, didn’t take very long – the whole thing was done in 2 weeks!
Is the single accompanied by a visualiser?
‘Murder’ won’t have a visualiser we don’t think.
Do you have any further music releases planned for 2025/2026?
Yes! We’re currently working on the final mixes of our second album, which will be releasing in February of 2026!
Where is your hometown and could you please describe it in five words?
Jay is born and bred in London, Gee is from Wiltshire. We’re both living in London now! So London in 5 words… Chaotic, Vibrant, Dirty, Opportunity, Culture!
How do you look after your voice?
Hot yoga, and honey lemon and ginger are the two things I go for! There’s something about hot yoga which opens up my whole being and lets me really sing. Before stage, or recording, I go for a hot honey lemon and ginger tea, with a sprinkle of sea salt (ha!!)
Do you have any live dates planned in the UK/Europe in 2025/2026?
We do – we’ve got a headline show coming up on November 20th at the Islington Assembly Hall in London. Then in spring 2026 we’re currently exploring returning to Europe for a run of more shows!
What two things do you hope to have achieved once you have left the stage?
The most important thing for us is that the people who have come to see us leave feeling that they were glad to have left the house. The second good sign for us is that when we come off stage we can’t really remember the show at all ha! This generally means that we’ve really been in the moment with the band on stage and delivered!
Do you have any favoured stage instruments, effects, pedals, microphones etc?
Gee performs with her Sennheiser e935 – it’s a really dynamic microphone, and really compliments Gee’s tones! Piano wise, Jay performs with his Nord Piano 2. Although if the venue has a piano, Jay will always use that instead!
Who are some of your musical influences? Do you have any recommendations?
Jamiroquai, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Billie Holiday
What makes GeeJay happy and what makes you unhappy?
We’ve got a young daughter, and expecting another one any day now ha! Family time is when we’re the happiest!
