Scottish singer-songwriter Greig Taylor has been recording and touring as the Greig Taylor Band and their latest album ‘The Light’ is out now. We chatted to Greig Taylor about the album and more:
Who is in Greig Taylor Band and what do they play?
Greig Taylor Band features Greig Taylor on vocals, Nelson McFarlane on bass, Ken Clark on keys with former Marianne Faithful guitarist Brian McFie and former John Martyn drummer Dave Cantwell complete the line-up.
You have released your debut album ‘The Light’. How did you want to approach the making of the album?
The album was made during covid. It was really tough to get it over the line but we knew we had a great set of songs. The title track The Light is about the fact at times we felt we would never see the light at the end of the tunnel. Thankfully, we did!
Where did you record the album and who produced it?
The album was recorded and engineered by Roddymacaudio in Glasgow.
One of the tracks on the album is ‘Born To Love You’ (featuring Earl Thomas). How did the collaboration arise and what is the inspiration/story behind the song?
I toured Eastern Europe with Earl Thomas and our gospel acapella show. Touring Poland, Czech Republic and Slovakia, I gained an amazing insight into the blues and what it meant. Also, I got first hand experience working with a double- Grammy nominated artist. it was during the tour that I spoke with Earl about writing a song for us to duet on in my next record.
What is your earliest musical memory?
My earliest musical memory was climbing my mums loft and finding an old LP, containing a host of amazing songs which have influenced me to this day.
Who are some of your musical influences?
Elvis, Otis Redding, The Doors, Joe Cocker.
What two things do you hope to have achieved once you have left the stage?
I hope to leave a legacy of music that my family will remember me for generations. That’s a huge goal with me and my art.
Do you have any favoured stage instruments, effects, pedals, microphones etc?
It’s all about the band around me. Great band, great times.
Where is your hometown and could you please describe it in five words?
Stirling: beautiful, stunning, historic, castle, Monument
Do you have any interesting, funny or memorable stories from the album recording sessions?
All I will say is recording the album was a labour of love. It was just a joy to be up close and personal in the studio with such talented guys.
Do you have any plans for live shows in Europe/UK in 2024?
We already are scheduled to go into the studio in September to work on some brand new material. We have a series of 2024 shows to promote The Light including London, Newcastle, Glasgow & more!
Which of your tracks hear you at your a) happiest, b) angriest and c) most reflective?
Happiest – Three Chords & The Truth
Angriest- Real Born Winner
Most reflective – The Light
How do you look after your voice?
I use good quality manuka, vitamin C, plenty water and always warm up!
