American singer, songwriter, guitarist, and Gibson brand ambassador Jared James Nichols is returning to the UK for a tour and told us all about it:
Firstly, I wanted to ask you how did the UK and European Tour with The Winery Dogs go? Any interesting/funny stories from the tour?
It was an absolutely incredible tour! It was beyond inspiring to warm up the stage for such legendary players every night. Nothing too funny happened, i struck up a great friendship with Richie Kotzen which is awesome! But, the one thing I can say is how nice all three guys were, it was a total blast.
You recently released your latest single ‘“Easy Come, Easy Go’. What was the inspiration behind that track?
Yes! The inspiration behind the track is basically a modern-day leaving song. Pure blues for 2023. It’s all about life on the road and how fast time can come and go. It’s almost like you’re never in one place too long, but you have to be ok with it! This song was super fun to cut live in the studio as well. It’s a beast!
Where is your hometown and could you please describe it in five words?I grew up 8 miles outside of East Troy, Wisconsin. 5 words? Hmmm. Country, Cornfields, Quiet, Farms, Cows. Hahah!
In addition, you will be returning to the UK for an eight-date October 2023 headline tour with Dutch rockers DeWolff also joining you on all the dates. How did that opportunity arise?
I love playing the UK. I’m so excited to come back for a full headline run in October with our friends in De Wolff! I recently played a few shows with them in the Netherlands in February, and it was such a great time. We hit it off, I knew that we would be able to definitely play more together in the future. It’s a great match musically. When the idea came up for my upcoming dates, we asked them if they wanted to join, they instantly agreed. One thing is for sure, these shows will be special and absolutely rocking.
Interestingly, each of the dates will also include a set from several British blues rock acts including Doomsday Outlaw, Silveroller and Toby Lee on select shows. How does it feel for you as an artist being able to support artists from the UK and Europe?
It is awesome. I am a very big supporter for giving all bands a chance in the spotlight. We searched for bands that would match up musically, but also are hungry and really want to play. It’s cool to be able to cultivate and help grow a scene where there are multiple bands, instead of trying to be a gatekeeper. As a music fan, I think that that is better for the future of the music we love.
Do you have any favoured stage guitars/effects/pedals?
I do! I never leave home without my trusty signature Epiphone Gold Glory. Also, I have two incredible 1950s Les Paul Standards (Ole Red & Dorothy) as far a pedals…it’s Klon Overdrive, a Tubescreamer, and my Octavian fuzz pedal for when I want to get crazy.
How do you look after your voice?
I definitely treat my voice as an instrument. Before a show, I do light warm-ups as well as drink some tea or at least hot water. It’s very important to warm up, as well as warm down after a show. I try and not yell over the music after a show while talking & make sure to get at least 6 hours of sleep a night!
Your self-titled third studio album is out now on Black Hill Records. How did you approach this record and was it a difficult one to write?
I really wanted to make a record that served as a menu for my live show. In the past, people would always tell me that they preferred my live sound compared to my records. So I really went into the studio with a mindset to bring that live energy to record. We ended up tracking live straight to tape, and then I sang over it. We didn’t fix anything, it was very important to keep it organic and feeling real. As far as the songwriting, I had time to write the songs I wanted to. I feel as if I was not rushed, and it was an absolute blast to record these songs in that nature.
What makes Jared James Nichols happy and what makes you unhappy?
Things that make me happy: My Family, dogs, guitars, fitness, good food, classic cars.
Things that make me NOT happy: Delayed Travel, Airports, early morning singing, ego-trip musicians, useless drama.
