Kyle Falconer Talks New Solo Album, Musical Influences And More
Songwriter Kyle Falconer will release his new solo album ‘The One I Love The Most’ on Friday 7th February 2025. He very kindly took time out of his busy schedule to talk to us about the new record, musical influences and more:
When did you begin songwriting?
When I first got into rap music age 11, before I knew how to play a guitar, I used to try and write rap songs, then I started playing guitar at age 12 and discovered The Beatles, the first song I wrote was called ‘You Weigh Me Down’.
What is your earliest musical memory?
I used to always listen to classical music with my dad on his record player, I remember feeling enchanted by the music and then discovered more styles through musicals from my older sisters.
Your new album ‘The One I Loved The Most’ is released on 7th February 2025. How did you want to approach the making of the album?
I had had the idea for a while to do a collection of songs with girls names, as I realised over the years its something I have a lot of, I have always been inspired by the women in my life and since moving to Spain I have been spending more time in my own studio – La Sierra Casa – and thought now feels like the right time.
Where did you record the album and who produced it?
As mentioned above, it was recorded at my studio in Spain, La Sierra Casa. It’s self produced, with my friend Kris Evans engineering.
Do you have any interesting, funny or memorable stories from the album recording sessions?
I do a lot of meditation to get into the zone when recording and decided it was a good idea to do a headstand on a wobbly piano stool after a couple of beers, obviously I face planted onto the rug and got a carpet burn all down my nose… a week before my wedding.
You have the new track ‘Angelina’ on the record. What was the story/inspiration behind that track?
It was originally a View demo from our album ‘Bread & Circuses’ and we had Oliver Kraus who famously done the strings for The Verve’s Bittersweet Symphony – we ended up not using it and it’s always played on my mind as I loved it at the time, I altered it in the recording to fit with the new album concept with the new title “Angelina” and changed the lyrics.
Who was in the band on the album and what did they play?
I got my good friends who play along side me solo, Drew Palmer and Neeve Zarah to do help with backing vocals and extra guitar and asked my crazy friend, ‘Prose’ to do a rap on the track ‘Lucy’ – he’s an incredible rapper from Manchester.
Did you use any particular instruments, microphones, recording equipment to help you get a particular sound/tone for the record?
No we used the most basic sounds and tried not to over complicate the sound, to capture the way it was initially written, that’s something I usually do on my albums but this concept was not to be over produced, I wanted the lyrics and the bare bones of the songs to shine through.
Was it a difficult album to write?
If I go back in time, it would have been difficult to collate all these songs in the one place and write them together but because of the concept of the album, I already had the songs, so it was really enjoyable experience being able to revisit them.
Who designed/created the album artwork?
My wife Laura came up with the initial album artwork concept and we sent it to my good friend and super talented artist ‘Stagboy’ who I met through our La Sierra Casa music camps, to finalise it and add his own artistic flare. He has such a unique style and he captured exactly what I was looking for.
Which of your new album tracks hear you at your a) happiest, b) angriest and c) most reflective?
Five Rebeccas – I love playing this song live
Penny – Because it’s complicated, I forget my lyrics all the time and it is tricky one to play live
Kelly – its deep subject and it’s one of my favourites
What two things do you hope to have achieved once you have left the stage?
Make sure everyones had an absolute stomper of a time and just that I’m happy with how it’s gone and been received,
Do you have any favoured stage instruments, effects, pedals, microphones etc?
I used to always play 335 Gibsons but recently I’ve been playing my Fender Jazz Master, I get attached to one guitar and usually stick to it for some time.
Where is your hometown and could you please describe it in five words?
Dundee. ‘Bonniest city in the world.’
How do you look after your voice?
Beer n smokes
You are given the opportunity to write the score for a film adaptation of a novel that you enjoy. Which novel is it and why?
I’ve only read Catcher and the Rye, so it would have to be that. I’m more of a film buff, my minds too fast for books.
Who are some of your musical influences? Do you have any recommendations?
Neil Finn, Crowded House, Alanis Morissette, Shania Twain, Oasis, John Lennon, Michael Jackson.
Do you have any live dates planned in the UK/Europe in 2025 to support the new album?
Yeah we are doing a load of intimate shows for this album, loads of record shops, all information on my Instagram.
Who are some of the most important women in your life?
My wife Laura, my 2, soon to be 3, daughters, Wylde, Winnie and …
What makes Kyle Falconer happy and what makes you unhappy?
Water parks and sun with my family
Bad weather – my wife says I have seasonal depression!
