Singer-songwriter and guitarist Loz Campbell is an alternative rock artist who has a short run of UK live dates in 2024. She kindly sat down with us to talk about the dates, the track ‘Beautiful Liar’ and more:

When did you begin songwriting?

Around 14, someone told me I should write songs if I want to progress (I was playing the weekly open mic nights at that point) so I gave it a go and the ball started rolling very fast from that point. It came very naturally and I wrote/released 2 EPs before I reached the age of 16/left school!

What is your earliest musical memory?

Apparently I was a fan of the Bee Gees in the womb! I remember getting a toy drum kit at around the age of 4/5 and I was always singing and putting on shows for the family. I was nicknamed “the poser”.

Who is in your band, what do they play and how did you meet?

We’ll start with Steve Pickles, (bass player) who I stole from another band around 2/3 years ago, he’s been a great addition and has gained quite a reputation on the scene for his cool stage performances. Tom Kirby (Drummer), the heartbeat of the band and my writing partner in crime for the past 5/6 years, Will Price (guitarist) the new boy who is bringing some very exciting sounds and boosting our live shows!

Do you have any other passions in addition to the music?

I’ve always loved sport (netball, rugby mainly) and motorbikes, recently I’ve become a passionate gardener, don’t tell me sweetcorn doesn’t ROCK!

Do you have any interesting, funny or memorable stories from the album recording sessions?

During the recording of ‘Beautiful Liar’ me and Tom camped at a campsite near the studio, we swung by the pub on the way back so by the time we got back to the site it was pitch black and there were bunny rabbits EVERYWHERE! I think one entered the front of the tent at some point during the night.

One of your previously released songs is ‘Beautiful Liar’. What was the story/inspiration behind the track?

It was a follow on track from ‘Bad Girl” it was a warning with the usual cheeky wink to watch out for the other bad girls out there. It’s all about love goggles and how people can make you feel like you’re on a pedestal and then drop you.

Was it a difficult song to write?

This was one of the most enjoyable for me to write and record, everything flowed really well and the guitar solo happened very naturally coupled with the fact that I recorded it in flip flops in the height of summer which is my favourite time to record.

Which of your tracks hear you at your a) happiest, b) angriest and c) most reflective?

A – It’s not released yet but it was on my to do list to write a happy one so it’s coming ha! B – The World Was Made To Destroy You C – What Are You Doing It For?

What two things do you hope to have achieved once you have left the stage?

For people who have seen us before to say “That’s the best I’ve seen them” and for the people that haven’t seen us before we like to convert them.

Do you have any favoured stage instruments, effects, pedals, microphones etc?

I’m always armed with my 1975 Gibson and my PRS. My favourite pedal at the minute is the Super Badass Distortion (that is the actual name), I use an SE V7 microphone as when I do the pyramid at the end it isn’t too expensive to replace when it smashes on the floor (I try really hard to catch it but sometimes you’re in the moment and balance is more important when I’m up there).

Where is your hometown and could you please describe it in five words?

Hometown is Wakefield. 5 words – small, northern, friendly, rhubarb, rugby.

How do you look after your voice?

I try and warm up before we go on and drink plenty of water. Lemon and ginger tea. This summer has proved a challenge with a rise in some very nasty respiratory illnesses, so I’ve been steaming as much as possible. Steam room and sauna I find is the best combo.

You are given the opportunity to write the score for a film adaptation of a novel that you enjoy. Which novel is it?

To Kill A Mockingbird.

Who are some of your musical influences? Do you have any recommendations?

Soundgarden, Linkin Park, Korn, Skunk Anansie, Garbage, Guns n Roses, Nickleback, Tori Amos, Fiona Apple the list goes on….

Do you have any live dates planned in the UK/Europe in 2024/2025?

30th August – Stormin’ Castle (Durham)
31st August – Headline Gig Camden
8th November – Whitby Rocks

Do you have any new music releases planned for 2024/2025?

Yes we have a new single coming out hopefully before the end of the year and we are currently writing the remainder of the songs for the album so we’ll be heading into the studio soon as well.

What makes Loz Campbell happy and what makes you unhappy?

Happy – Pasta, sunshine, cooking a nice meal with a glass of wine in hand, having loved ones close. Unhappy – Early mornings, rain, wind, horseradish sauce.
