Matt Pearce & The Mutiny are setting sail (apologies for the pun) on an April 2024 UK Tour with Sari Schorr and have released their new music video. He sat down with us to talk about the live dates and more:

Who is in Matt Pearce & The Mutiny and what do they play?

 So the live band is:

Me (Matt Pearce) – vocals, guitar

Daliah Sherrington – vocals

Ghost – bass

Ollie Dixon – drums

Chris Burgham – keyboards

Pete Back – sax

When and how did you all meet?

We met in the London rock and blues scene, various places, Metalworks, Blues Kitchen etc

Your sophomore album ‘The Soul Food Store’ is out now. How did you want to approach the making of the record?

The approach was kinda dictated by the circumstances, i.e. the Lockdown..! That’s when most of it got written and recorded.

I did want to make an album where every song was different, so it covered all the styles I like playing.

Where did you record the album and who produced it?

I recorded it at Soup Studios, a very groovy boat on the Thames! And I produced it myself.

You have recently released the new single ‘From Here To The Moon’. What was the story/inspiration behind the track?

I had the main riff lying around from another song that didn’t work, one of those riffs that sounds like someone must’ve done it before..! Just waiting for someone to tell me who…

And the song popped in my head one day while off gigging, I remember being in a hotel and putting it down on my phone before I forgot it…

Inspiration I guess was to do an old style boogie track. like 70s ZZ Top. And the lyrics are meant to be funny..!

In addition, the single is accompanied by an official lyric video. What was the thought process behind the video and who did you work with on it?

I worked with a guy called JJ, we needed something done quickly and the obvious idea was to mix a bit of live footage of the band with space-based stuff, so he found a bunch of old, obscure film footage to chuck in there, and it worked really well I think.

Do you have any favoured stage instruments, effects, pedals, microphones etc?

My ’73 Les Paul Goldtop as the main guitar, a cheap Ibanez for the open-tuning slide stuff, the Dual Terror Orange amp (best amp ever), and a bit of wah, POG octave pedal, and that’s pretty much it, keep it simple!

Where is your hometown and could you please describe it in five words?

Was Glasgow, now London.

5 words?

Not as cold as Glasgow!

Do you have any interesting, funny or memorable stories from the album recording sessions?

I find the whole process fascinating, I do a lot of pre production so I can go into the studios knowing exactly what I want, I do a demo at home and we then replace everything bit by bit, putting on proper drums, good bass playing etc, so the finished song still has a connection to the original demo, like Trigger’s Broom…

The one exception to all the prep is Keyboard Day, as I don’t play keys, so it’s always amazing to see what they put on there, the sprinkling of the icing on the cake!

Do you have any plans for live shows in Europe/UK in 2024?

Yep next live shows are a 10 date UK tour with Sari Schorr in April. Just working on stuff for beyond that.

Which of your new tracks hear you at your a) happiest, b) angriest and c) most reflective?

a/ From Here To the Moon

b/ It’s not an angry album, but All The Gods has a bit of angst in it.

c/ Bring It All To Me

Was it a difficult album to write?

It took a while… some of it was easy and some wasn’t..! The space of the lockdown actually helped, I’m finding it trickier to get the time to write at the moment…

How do you look after your voice?

Good Scotch whisky, and coffee with honey.

What makes Matt Pearce & The Mutiny happy and what makes you unhappy?

Happiest when we’re making that beautiful racket onstage, unhappy when things don’t go to plan, sometimes life gets in the way…
