Simple Minds ex-drummer, Mel Gaynor will release his solo album ‘Come With Me’ on Marquee Records on 3rd May 2024. He kindly sat down with JLTT to talk about the album, recording, his career and more:
Your new album ”Come With Me’ is released in May 2024 on Marquee Records. How did you want to approach the making of the record? The approach was to make a record that would be as universal as possible to cover all musical bases.Where did you record it and who produced it? The record was self produced and recorded at Brooke Studios in Wallington.Do you have any interesting, funny or memorable stories from the recording sessions? Not really we are a serious bunch. In addition, you have your new single ‘Run’ which reminds me at times of the country artist Darius Rucker. What was the inspiration/story behind the song?
I wanted to appeal to the country and Celtic community on ‘Run’ so hence the violin.
Do you have any favoured stage instruments, effects, pedals? Not really.Do you have any live plans for 2024 in the UK and Europe? Yes of course to travel the world with this album as many gigs as possible.Who is in your band? Ok we have James Ford MD/ Lead Guitarist, Gordon Gaynor/ Guitarist and vocal, Melissa Gaynor/ Background and Lead Vocals, Issaih Brown / Bass And Vocal, Toby Baker/ Keyboards and Vocal.
How do you look after your voice? No shouting and plenty of Peppermint Tea.Could you please tell me about your version of Chris Issak’s ‘Wicked Game’. What was the reason for choosing that song and who sings it with you on the album? Its one of my favourite songs and wanted to make a stripped down version with my daughter Melissa on vocal as well. Was it a difficult album to write? Actually it came together very smoothly but it was a long process I wanted to get it as perfect as possible.
What two pieces of advice do you have for a novice drummer? Listen intently and be as patient as possible.Interestingly, you have also included a duet of ‘Addicted To Love’ featuring the late Robert Palmer himself. How did you go about recording the track with both of your voices and did you know Robert Palmer personally? Well yes Robert (Palmer) and I were close friends and he liked my version of addicted so he decided to record the second verse on the record. In doing some research, I read that you also do charity work around the NHS and Mental Health. What was it that drew you to supporting those causes and do you have any charitable events/activities upcoming this year? I would love to get involved in any charitable events and back them fully I just want to be on hand for anything connected with them. What makes Mel Gaynor happy and what makes you unhappy? What makes anyone happy health strength sun family, unhappy would be egotistical ignorance.
