Olivia Lunny Talks New Single, Her Voice And More

Olivia Lunny

Canadian singer-songwriter and pop powerhouse, Olivia Lunny, has released her new single ‘City Of Angels’ from her forthcoming album. We wanted to learn more about the track, her voice and more and she kindly agreed:

When did you begin songwriting?

I started writing songs at the age of 12. Scribbling lyrics in notebooks when I didn’t know how else to process what I was feeling. It was my way of making sense of the world!

What is your earliest musical memory?

Harmonizing to every word of my dad’s classic rock records on the way to school! My dad is a big music junkie and knows so many stories and history behind so many songs. To this day he’ll still quiz me and ask what band members wrote certain old songs.

Your new single ‘City Of Angels’ is out now. What was the inspiration/story behind the track?

The song reflects my experience of LA as a city of contrasts. Glamour and gloom, dreams and disillusionment. It’s about navigating those contradictions and finding meaning and remaining grounded in the chaos.

Where did you record the song and who produced it?

I recorded it in a studio in the hills of Los Angeles. The track was co-produced by Keith and Oscar of “the orphanage” and co-written by the guys, Sophie Simmons and me.

Do you have any interesting, funny, or memorable stories from the recording sessions for the album?

There was this moment where we were layering the vocals, and the power kept cutting out because of a storm. We joked that even LA’s weather was chiming in on the song’s drama.

Did you use any particular instruments, microphones, or recording equipment to help you get a particular sound/tone for the record?

I love ambient electric guitars. For a few of the album tracks that will be coming out I had an incredible guitarist layer beautiful sound…! Also love a dreamy synth- My long-term collaborator profiler friend exclap_ is a wizard with synths.

Who created/designed the single artwork?

An amazing photographer (William Galindo) took candid and BTS of the whole shoot. The best photos were unplanned and ended up being the album start!

Which of your tracks hear you at your a) happiest, b) angriest, and c) most reflective?

a) Happiest: “Dominoes”

b) Angriest: “The Walls”

c) Most Reflective: “City of Angels”

The single is accompanied by a visualiser. What was the thought process behind that?

I wanted the visualiser to reflect the hazy, dreamlike quality of the song. We leaned into muted colours and shadowy imagery to bring out that sense of searching and vulnerability.

Was it a difficult song to write?

This song felt effortless. Sophie And I wrote the lyrics in a few hours. It started as a very fun playful song and in retrospect the lyrics came out very reflective and honest!

What two things do you hope to have achieved once you have left the stage?

That I’ve made people feel extremely present, and that they leave feeling a little less alone.

Where is your hometown and could you please describe it in five words?

Winnipeg, Manitoba: cold, creative, tight knit, grounded, home.

How do you look after your voice?

Lots of hydration, sleep, and warm-ups. I also swear by manuka honey hot water and try not to overdo it when I’m talking between shows.

You are given the opportunity to write the score for a film adaptation of a novel that you enjoy. Which novel is it and why?

The Alchemist- It’s so visually rich and mysterious, and I’d love to bring its magic to life through music.

Who are some of your musical influences? Do you have any recommendations?

I’m inspired by artists like Fleetwood Mac, Miley Cyrus and Kacey Musgraves,

Do you have any live dates planned in the UK/Europe in 2024/2025?

I can’t share too much yet, but I’ll be announcing dates in the new year!!

Do you have any future music releases planned for 2025?

Absolutely. My new album is dropping in 2025, and there’s so much more in the works that I can’t wait to share.
