Formed in 2024, Hailing from South Wales, SIRENSONG are the perfect blend of hard rock, metal and electronica with hooks that’ll live in your head rent free. They have released their new single ‘March Into The Sun’ and lead vocalist Alice Freya spoke to us:
Who is in SIRENSONG, what do they play and how did you meet?
We are a 5 piece hard rock/ metal band from South Wales.
Alice Freya – Vocals
Jon Evans & Ryan Barnard – Guitars
Billy George – Bass
Daz Joseph – Drums
We have known each other for a few years now, four of us were in a progressive rock band together (Last Flight To Pluto). Billy is the ‘New guy’ among us, we’d never played with him, but we’d all seen him perform on the local scene and figured he’d be a good fit for the band. Thankfully he felt the same way and agreed to join us.
When did you begin songwriting?
We started writing together for SIRENSONG in 2023.
What is your earliest musical memory?
yan: Watching his dad playing the Shadows on guitar (5 years old)
Jon : Playing his nans piano (5 years old)
Daz : Being backstage with his dads band (6 years old)
Alice : Singing along to Elton John in the car with her dad. (7 years old)
Billy : Singing Busted songs in the bath (3 years old)
Your new single ‘March Into The Sun’ is out now. What was the inspiration/story behind the track?
The song was inspired by the way everyone is fed up of how things are now. There’s so much injustice everywhere, It’s a power to the people song, stand up for what you believe in. Thankfully a lot of us are waking up to the truth, which is something you can’t find on the main stream media these days.
Where did you record the single and who produced it?
March Into The Sun was recorded by Tim Hamill at Sonic One Studio, Llanelli and produced by our drummer, Daz.
Do you have any interesting, funny or memorable stories from the recording sessions?
One of our funniest memories during the recording was Jon wanting to get a guitar tone that sounded like a ‘belligerent stingy nettle’.
We’re still not exactly sure what that sounds like, but he’s happy with the results.
Did you use any particular instruments, microphones, recording equipment to help you get a particular sound/tone for the record?
The Neural DSP Quad Cortex has been an absolute essential bit of kit during the recording, with both Jon and Billy using one throughout the entire process.
Was it a difficult song to write?
It was one of the quickest songs for us to piece together so far. We were all confident with how it was going section by section and it was pretty much finished before we had too much time to think about it. It’s such a good feeling when it flows so easily.
The single is accompanied by an official lyric video. What was the thought process behind the video and created it?
We wanted the meaning behind the song to be clear, so we felt that a lyric video was essential in getting the message across.
Billy came up with the idea of opening the video with a shot of the steel works, as TATA steel in Port Talbot is very close to where we live. It’s being sold off and thousands of people have been left without work. That fitted some of the anger that we’re all feeling towards the people in power right now.
Which of your new tracks hear you at your a) happiest, b) angriest and c) most reflective?
Are you even allowed to write happy songs if you’re in a hard rock/metal band? The closest we get to that would be ‘Dirty Whispers ‘ which is a song about escaping from life in a small town where everyone is opinionated and knows everyone else’s business. It’s about getting on your bike, in your car and just driving away to a new life and finding freedom.
Our angriest song is definitely March Into The Sun, since it’s so relevant to how many of us are feeling right now.
Our most reflective song is probably ‘What Is Love’ it’s about someone trying to find a relationship on today’s dating scene. How it’s mostly all done online now, usually just for hook- ups and it’s filled with so much Cat Fishing.
What two things do you hope to have achieved once you have left the stage?
After any performance the most important thing for us is to engage with our fans. After all, no band is successful without them. When people take time out to travel to our shows, the least we can do is thank them and sign our merchandise for them.
The second most important thing is to do an ‘idiot check’ which means to double check the stage to make sure we haven’t left anything behind. Daz once left a £380 Zildjian cymbal behind which unfortunately got lost in the post when the venue tried to return it to him, he was definitely the idiot that gig.
Do you have any favoured stage instruments, effects, pedals, microphones etc?
On stage Ryan uses Ibanez AZ guitars , line 6 Pod Go, Hughes and Kettner Grand Meister with a Diesel 2×12.
Billy uses a Marcus Miller 5 string bass and a Quad Cortex.
Jon plays a Levinson Blade RH4 through a Quad Cortex .
Daz plays a Sonar drum kit with Zildjian and Istanbul Turk cymbals.
Alice has an old Beyerdynamic microphone which she’s used for over a thousand gigs and it’s still going strong.
Where is your hometown and could you please describe it in five words?
Our hometown is Bridgend, describing it in 5 words is hard but we’d say ‘The land of shared poverty ‘.
How do you look after your voices?
I’ve never been the type to warm up before a show. I always say that I talk really loudly and I never shut up, so my vocal cords never really have the time to get cold. However, water on stage is essential in my performance.
You are given the opportunity to write the score for a film adaptation of a novel that you enjoy. Which novel is it and why?
Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman because we could write a colossal breakdown for it. We could get really dramatic and dark with it and just have so much fun.
Who are some of your musical influences? Do you have any recommendations?
Some of our biggest influences are Ozzy, Ritchie Kotzen, Guthrie Govan, Iron Maiden, Tesseract, Robert Plant, Bring Me The Horizon, Rush.
Do you have any live dates planned in the UK/Europe in 2024/2025?
We have some exciting support shows coming up in 2025 which unfortunately we’re not allowed to announce just yet, but as soon as we can, we’ll be sharing it everywhere.
Do you have any future music releases planned for 2025?
We are back in the studio in January to add the finishing touches to the album and then we’ll be releasing it at the end of winter / very early spring. But we’ll possibly drop another single before then.
Who created/designed the single artwork?
Mark Donoghue, vocalists from King Kraken designed the artwork for March Into The Sun.
What makes SIRENSONG happy and what makes you unhappy?
We’re happiest when we’re playing and writing together. We’re unhappy when we can’t find any food places open on the way home from a gig, we all get pretty hangry.
