WUK modern metal quartet Skarlett Riot released their single ‘Lullaby’ in March and have a series of shows planned including headlining the Firestarter Stage at Maid Of Stone Festival 2024. Frontwoman Chloe ‘Skarlett’ Drinkwater chatted to us about the band and more:
Who is in Skarlett Riot and what do they play?
Skarlett Riot are: Chloe Drinkwater – Skarlett – vox Daniel Oglesby – Guitar / screams Luke Oglesby – Drums Tim Chambers – Bass / Screams
When and how did you all meet?
Chloe & Dan met in school years. Luke is Dan’s brother so we go way back ! We met Tim on the gig circuit back in 2017, he joined the band in 2018.
Your new single ‘Lullaby’ is out now. What was the story/inspiration behind the song?
Lullaby is quite a personal song written about losing a loved one and how life isn’t the same without them. The positive message behind it is to cherish every moment with your loved ones because memories live forever.
Do you have any favoured stage instruments, effects, pedals etc?
We are quite stripped back really and don’t use a lot onstage, out front I like some reverb on my voice but we have quite a dry stage sound. Pedal wise the boys use a drop tune pedal which means they don’t need to change guitars for different tunings which is quite good for stage!
Where is your hometown and could you please describe it in five words?
Scunthorpe. Small town with a steelworks!
Do you have any plans for live shows in Europe/UK in 2024?
Teddy Rocks – 4th May Mangata July 13th Maid Of Stone Festival 21st July We have a couple of unannounced shows in august, keep an eye out !
Which of your tracks hear you at your a) happiest, b) angriest and c) most reflective?
A)Gravity b) Warrior c) lullaby
Who are some of your musical influences? Do you have any recommendations?
Really into Immanence, Dead By April, Infected Rain, Set Your Sails, Motionless In White lately.
Do you have any further music releases planned?
We will release a new album this year! Watch this space.
How do you look after your voices?
Chloe warms up for around 30 – 40 mins an hour before stage time. Avoid shouting, alcohol, caffeine and stay hydrated. Sleep well!
What makes Skarlett Riot happy and what makes you unhappy?
The fans and creative freedom to write the music we are passionate about. Seeing people singing along to your songs is just an unreal feeling. Performing live is what we are all about. What makes us unhappy is seeing venue closures, bands calling it a day and tour cancellations. The music industry is so important to a lot of people not just musicians but fans too as escapism.
