UK vocal harmony group The Overtones are no strangers to us at JLTT and have released seven albums of material as well as regular touring. With their November/December 2024 UK Tour lined up, we chatted to member Mark Franks about the tour, the group and more:
Who are The Overtones and how did you meet?

We are a UK vocal harmony group that met over 15 years ago and, after a lot of grafting, were signed to Warner Brothers for a 5 album deal that blessed us with a multi- platinum debut album and allowed us to travel the world sharing our feel good music.

Your new single ‘Ladies Night’ is out now. What was the reason for choosing this track?

Over the past few years we have been exploring the disco classics of the late 70’s and early 80s from groups like Earth, Wind & Fire and Kool & The Gang and this track seemed like a natural progression for us. We couldn’t wait to put our Overtones stamp on it. We also knew it would be a real moment on our Good Times Tour last year so it had to be done!!

Who produced the single?

The track was produced by our long time friend and producer Julian Hinton who is also producer & arranger for the likes of Rod Stewart & Stormzy. We have worked with him for over a decade on numerous albums.

You will be embarking on the 25-date ‘The Good Times Christmas Tour’. How are you feeling about the tour?

We’re super excited to be back on the road this Christmas with our Good Times Christmas Tour. We had such an overwhelming response last year when we went back on the road at Christmas for the first time since 2019 and it’s so humbling that we’ve become part of people’s Christmas calendar over the years.

Given your vast catalogue, is it difficult picking a setlist? Do you have a specific song selection process?

With 7 albums worth of music to choose from it’s definitely a bit of a minefield to whittle it down to an hour and a half setlist but after 14 years we know the tracks that are going to get the crowd in a frenzy and also the tracks that are close to our fans heart. For instance, our original Gambling Man is always a special moment and more recently we’ve added Sweet Caroline into our shows which gets the most insane reaction! People just LOVE that song.

What is your earliest musical memory?

My earliest musical memory would have to be listening to music in the car on road trips with the family. My mum & dad have very different tastes in music so it would be songs from the musicals from my mum followed by Meatloaf’s Greatest Hits from my Dad. My dad used to record the old reruns of the charts on the radio so there was a whole host of songs from the 60’s & 70’s too.

As the UK Tour will take place in November and December 2024, what does Christmas mean to you?

As with most people, Christmas is a time for family. It’s a chance to get together with my nearest and dearest. To eat, drink, exchange gifts & play silly games.

Where is your hometown and could you please describe it in five words?

Manchester. Buzzin, cosmopolitan, friendly, grim, special.

Do you have any further music releases planned such as more singles, EP or an album?

We’re always planning ahead and are excited to be working on some original music which we’ll share with the world as soon as it’s ready.

What music do you enjoy listening to? Do you have any recommendations?

I am an unashamed pop fan and have been since my earliest memory. From Madonna to Backstreet Boys. Aha to Rick Astley it really is my favourite genre of music. I’ve never really understood why Pop is such a dirty word. Especially as, from my experience, it’s always the pop songs that get everyone up at a party!! At the moment I’m listening to a lot of Betty Who and another artist called Conan Gray.

How do you look after your voices?

Lots of warming up before the show and vocal rest if I can feel my voice getting tired, especially on tour.

What two things do you hope to have achieved once you have left the stage?

To have made as many people as possible forget their worries for the duration of our show and be leaving in a better mood than when they arrived.

What makes The Overtones happy and what makes you unhappy?

It sounds cliched, I know, but we love making people happy with our music. To see so many people up and dancing and singing every single word back to us never gets old. Finding coriander in my salad makes me unhappy!
