The Sons Of Guns will release their debut EP ‘You Shine The Sun’ on Friday 13th June 2025. We sat down with them to ask about the release and more:

Who is The Sons Of Guns and what do you play?

The Sons Of Guns are a gang of mates who met playing music in the clubs around Nice & decided to make music together. We play a mix of Rock , Folk, Country and Blues

What is your earliest musical memory?

Mine personally is watching my family play guitars and sing at family parties when I was around 4 years old

When did you begin songwriting?

The first song I wrote I was around 14 for a school project . It was about Jonah and the whale

The song was called meet my whale

You released your new single ‘It’s Getting Better’ in May 2025. What was the inspiration/story behind the track?

The story is a battle between optimism & always expecting the worst .

Where did you record the track and who produced it?

We recorded it at la source studio in Grasse in the south of France . I produced it with my cousin Nick Dawes as I do with all our music.

Do you have any interesting, funny or memorable stories from the recording sessions?

It was all loadsa fun ! So many good memories of recording over the years. Things certainly got more interesting when the swimming pool was installed ! We had something to do when we weren’t needed 🙂

Did you use any particular instruments, microphones, recording equipment to help you get a particular sound/tone for the record?

Once we finished the tracks we ran em through a reel to reel to add a bit of dirt and vintage sound. We also had a mic on the gravel outside and recorded a percussive back up to the shakers .

Which of your tracks hear you at your a) happiest, b) angriest and c) most reflective?

I think happiest would be Freewheeler

Angriest : there’s really no anger in any of the songs we’ve made. Thankfully.

and reflective is How Much I Loved Her So

Was it a difficult song to write?

Luckily none of the songs were hard to write. I find they just come out. The only time I force any kind of writing is if it’s for someone else. Then it’s more of a conscious process.

Who designed the single artwork?

It’s a guy called Geoffrey Gomiz. We all really love his work

What two things do you hope to have achieved once you have left the stage?

That people feel good about

That we did the best we could

Do you have any favoured stage instruments, effects, pedals, microphones etc?

I’m really the wrong guy for this question . The rest of the guys are real gear geeks. I really just have a guitar and a tuner and I’ll go with any mic that’s in front of me.

Where is your hometown and could you please describe it in five words?

I’m from Doncaster in the north of England .

1 rough

2 as

3 f**k

4 but

5 Lovely

How do you look after your voice?

Gotta put my hand up and say I do everything wrong when it comes to my voice

The single is accompanied by an official music video. What was the thought process behind the video and who directed it?

I directed it, it was born out of doing the vocals at the studio and finding myself dancing along like a kinda Dad dance, so the idea for us all doing the dad dance competition came about . And I thought we needed some comedy relief after the heavy Hollywood video.

You are given the opportunity to write the score for a film adaptation of a novel that you enjoy. Which novel is it and why?

Studying English Literature killed any joy I got for reading novels because I lost the ability to not analyse every word. So I only read books I can learn from. I’d love to do a score for a brief history of time.

Who are some of your musical influences? Do you have any recommendations?

We love the Beatles, Eagles, Beck, Gomez, Fleetwood Mac etc

I recently found Leif Vollebekk , and during lockdown I really got into Japanese soul funk disco, Khruangbin led me there. So I’d recommend any of the above.

Do you have any live dates in the UK/Europe for 2025?

We just did our first headline show in the south of France and it was sold out, so now we’re working on the rest .

Do you have any further music releases planned for 2025?

Yeah we’ve got the EP out on the 13th June, then more singles and then the album in October.

What makes The Sons Of Guns happy and what makes you unhappy?

I think we’re happiest on stage and unhappiest when we’re not making music together
