There’s clearly nothing like a spell busking on the streets of Prague to give your music some edge and tunefulness and to give you as performer some resilience! 
In this exclusive piece we pitch some questions to Thom Artway and can bring you his responses…let’s forgive him for liking Coldplay…

Who did the artwork for your Hedgehog album?

 

Tomski and Polanski. Czech artist. I love their unique style.

 

Which song of yours could open a thriller film?

 

What a question! Probably song from my second album “A Daughter’s Drawing”. But it has to start from the bridge otherwise it’s more romantic comedy material (haha).

 

You are offered the chance to record a song of yours with Lady Gaga… which one do you choose? And what musical arrangement do you put together?

 

There is a duet – Chasing The Wires – on my second album, that I sing with my Czech collegue Lenny. I can imagine Lady Gaga singing that part too! Lot of electronic elements in this one.

 

Honesty time! Which other band or artist would you NOT want to follow on stage?

 

I would never share the stage with artist that is extremist in any way – racist, homophobic etc.

 

Do you have any tour or festival appearances lined up?

 

I’m playing lot of festivals here in Czech Republic but also couple of outside of our country. Spring Break festival in Poland, Brain Bar Budapest…

 

Name the best live album in your collection – and what’s the appeal to you? the highlights?

 

Coldplay – Live 2003, Bon Iver – Sydney Opera House 2016, Sigur Rós – Heima (it’s more like a document, but has live performances). Sigur Rós go around the whole Iceland and perform in very different places, I love the atmosphere of all them.

 

Which song reminds you of secondary school days?

 

Blink 182 – I Miss You.

 

One thing a performer should avoid doing on stage?

 

To offend people.

 

Which song of yours is you at your most optimistic?

 

Sleeping Next To You, I guess.

 

Please tell us about ‘Can’t Wait’

 

I Can’t Wait the girl that I invited to see her favourite band! “I’m queuing outside all on my own trying to look like I’m not alone…” – I describe that weird feeling when you’re not sure whether that girl really comes. Music video to this song is conceived from a different perspective – girl haunting me on the street.

 

 

What’s the Artway Road Diet? And how do you look after your voice?

 

I’m vegetarian, I’m trying to cook and bring some of my own meal. It’s tought to find a proper meal on the way. I had some issues with my voice recently – too many gigs, my voice was really tired so I found a teacher. The most important is enough sleep.

 

Describe Prague for us in four words

 

Charming, peaceful, optimistic and safe.

 

What was your favourite venue to perform in, in Australia? Any reasons?

 

I did busking there. No proper venues. But if street was a venue I would say Southbank in Melbourne!

 

You can take one instrument on stage with you for a performance – what do you choose? 

 

Church organ with all the pipes! If only I knew how to play it.

 

 

The radio is on in the kitchen – what recording (by anyone) would you walk over to turn UP? What would you run over to turn OFF?

 

By my current mode I would turn up Efterklang and turn off disco music. But tomorrow it might be the opposite!
