TobySensey is an Afrofusion artist from Lagos, Nigeria, with roots in Imo State. As his latest EP ‘Reckless’ is out now, we felt that it was the perfect time for a chat:
What is your earliest musical memory?
It’s probably listening to Biggie Smalls, Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5 as a kid. We used to watch Thriller on Laser disc all the time.
When did you begin songwriting?
I started writing raps in school with the guys. I always loved the idea of creating and words are the quickest and cheapest tools a creator has. I took advantage of what I had available.
You have your new EP ‘Reckless’ which is out now. How did you want to approach the making of the EP?
Initially It was supposed to be a mixtape but the songs I was doing and the plans I have for the future and promotion being independent and all I thought it was best to make it an EP. Mixtape coming soon and then the Album.
Where did you record the EP and who produced it?
I recorded the songs on the EP at different times in my life. Some of the songs are a little older than the others.
Do you have any interesting, funny or memorable stories from the recording sessions?
Well, there’s a sneeze on one of the tracks on the EP. I’m not gonna say which one or where it is, ha! but It’s really hard to notice I don’t think even the producer noticed it and I told him about it, to take it out.
Who were the musicians who performed on the EP with you?
It was all me on this one but some engineers got in a phrase or two If it added quality to the work.
Did you use any particular instruments, microphones, recording equipment to help you get a particular sound/tone for the record?
Nothing in particular, the project did go through a lot of mixes and masters to get more of the sound I want.
Which of your new EP tracks hear you at your a) happiest, b) angriest and c) most reflective?
Happiest Its hard to pick but Hibiscus probably
Angriest is probably Reckless
Most reflective is For you/with you I would say
Does the EP’s title have a specific meaning/significance?
Yes, it does, in more than one way. There are a lot of things I want to do in music that seem like they’re not “allowed” like it’s out of the norm and reckless is the beginning of the norm to allow me to do that and cross barriers that are there for no real reason. Theres at least 3 different genres of music in Reckless but somehow, they all still fit the collective. My lingo s well It’s like a melting pot of slang from where I’ve lived but it easy to understand. That’s why the EP is described as a beautiful mess. I just did what I want with no rules and why not? The world has been so against that for the average person.
One of the tracks is the single ‘For You/With You’. What was the story/inspiration behind the track?
Probably a girl. I can’t remember who, the instrumentals hit me in the feels.
Was it a difficult EP to write?
Some songs took weeks to tighten up. Some songs I finished writing hours. It depends on my mood, the instrumental and the vibe but it’s always like that. All in all in wasn’t too tough to write but I took a lot of time nitpicking at the words.
Who designed the EP artwork?
I got this graphic designer I work with, Banjo. Great kid, I just give him the context and he does everything. I’m excited for him, his future is bright in my eyes.
Where is your hometown and could you please describe it in five words?
My hometown is Imo State East of Nigeria but I live in Lagos. I would say Tranquil, Peaceful, Bountiful, Lively and Green
How do you look after your voice?
I don’t honestly, I’m also a rapper I don’t need my voice so sweet. This singer I met gave me a tip though not to eat or drink anything cold. It actually helps I do that some days before I know there’s something I have to sing.
Do you have any live dates planned in the UK/Europe in 2025/2026?
My performing focus right now is local, maybe in 2026 but who knows what God has in store for me, I’m ready for anything.
What two things do you hope to have achieved once you have left the stage?
I’ve already achieved one which is to get on the stage, only thing left is to represent and do good all round.
Do you have any favored stage instruments, effects, pedals, microphones etc.?
I really wanted to learn to play the piano and the guitar amateurly, it made it easier to make beats at the time. An MPK maybe? For effects tremolo/vibrato.
You are given the opportunity to write the score for a film adaptation of a novel that you enjoy. Which novel is it and why?
At the moment maybe Digital Fortress by Dan Brown. Just because it’s the one I can think of that the movie hasn’t already been done. And it can be made out to be a really good movie.
Who are some of your musical influences? Do you have any recommendations?
Craig David, Michael Jackson, Rap, l’m not too choosy with rappers I just like good rap I don’t care where it’s from. I was listening to a lot of Saucekid from Nigeria and Eminem, Kano when I was younger.
Do you have any further music releases planned for 2025/2026?
Yeah, I got a single maybe a mixtape coming out at the end of the year or early next year after the tour in Nigeria.
What makes TobySensey happy and what makes you unhappy?
I love it when a plan comes together, it’s good to know all the hard work was not in vain. Unhappy, I would say hunger and bullying.
