Darius Rucker

Straight To Hell

(HumpHead Country/Wrasse Records)

This new single stars Darius Rucker but also features Jason Aldean, Luke Bryan and Charles Kelley (from Lady Antebellum, no less) so quite an assemblage of stardom and talent. The latest album from Rucker When Was The Last Time includes this cut. The song comes from an act called Drivin’ & Cryin’ and was chosen by Darius and co to close out the CMT Music Awards in Nashville this Summer. Ten years in Country means Rucker has some heavyweight pals. We saw him put in an excellent performance here in London when he played Country2Country. He made it look easy, indeed. But we think his heart is in it and he is comfortable with such material…

Shimmering fiddle brings the band in, all lazy bends and light swagger, A well-recorded vocal follows from all participants, the chorus sounding tight and rich. The lyrics is so tongue in cheek it hurts, the tale unfolds with elan. Most of all, this sounds like a gathering of people who respect each other and just love the song. A fiddle break is a strong feature, then the ensemble back off leaving the bass prominent in the mix. It leaves you smiling and can you ask for more?
