Soul Of A Man (Single)

(333 Records)

A new single from the established blues journeyman, with special guests. Soul Of A Man was, if memory serves the name of a Donny Hathaway album which I raided for Valdez In The Country, for a set-closer. This song however originally emanated from Blind Willie Johnson in the early 1930s, during a period of national depression. So with Strictly Come Dancing set to return…no, I’m kidding.

Present and correct on this recording we find both Shemekia Copeland – Johnny’s lass – AND British veteran performer and actor Paul Jones, as guests.

Harsh guitar chording topped with Jones’ Marine Band diatonic harmonica and scoops of slide guitar over a swaggering heavily-bassed beat. Copeland sings her heart out on the chorus. The harp break finds an archetypal compressed tone and the song rolls on, hitting an electric gospel refrain that is quite catchy. Then the song shimmers to a stop like a train on the tracks. Spirited stuff indeed.
