Singaporean singer-songwriter Abby Simone has a new EP ‘‘Familiar’ which is out now. She kindly chatted to JLTT:
-
You have recently released ‘Favourite Colour’ and ‘La Familia’, to create a two-track EP ‘Familiar’. What was the thought process/inspiration behind these two tracks?
Both these songs were written at different times of my life. “La Familia” when I was unsure of the career path I chose & “Favourite Colour” when I was unsure of the one thing I needed to be sure of – If I was even meant to be a songwriter. I wrote & composed both these songs in under 30 minutes as a f you to my, self doubting brain lol.
You worked with your regular collaborator Cuurley, while ‘Favourite Colour’ was produced and mixed by Chris Hewitt (Ed Sheeran, Mabel). What was that experience like and how di you want to approach the production of the tracks?
The most important part of being a songwriter (for me), is to be able to express myself freely in the studio. Whether I’m writing or discussing production. Both of them left their ego at home when they showed up for work and that humbling space was how these two songs were produced!
Where is your hometown and could you please describe it in five words?
Singapore! Family , Best friends, Chicken Rice, Vitasoy & Sentosa 🙂
From doing some research, it appears that you are an avid traveller and are also learning Italian. Do you have any funny/interesting/memorable stories from your travels?
HAHA yes I am and Yes I do. I bumped into a couple of guys here in Amsterdam who asked me something in Italian. I replied in italian and that sparked a conversation like omg how do you even know our language blah blah. In the midst of explaining why I learnt it and that it was mainly to communicate with my bf’s parents, I said Genitali (Genitals) instead of Genitori (Parents).
I said “I learnt italian to communicate better with my bf’s genitals.”
How do you look after your voice?
Hmm I try – Mostly Top grade Honey with Decaf tea every oof day. I’m still trying to be extra discipline and have off days but that’s not easy with a growing puppy
Do you have any favoured stage instruments/pedals/effects?
At the moment nope. I can only plug and play my acoustic right now but that’s next on my list!
What music do you like listening to? Any recommendations?
Lately I’ve been into chill/folk . Omar Apollo, Lizzy McAlpine, Nu Genea, Bomba Estereo
Do you have any plans for more music releases?
Yessssss! “Familiar” is an intermission Ep between the first and the second EP. Its all in the works but its coming sooner than you think hehehehehe
Do you have any live performances in the pipeline at all?
Wow you are asking all the right questions haha. YES, and I think the first showcase is going to be here where I live, In Amsterdam!
What makes Abby Simone happy and what makes you unhappy?
Entering that ethereal space between being on stage and facing my emotions as I sing my songs. I cant put that space into words but I’m elated.
Being misunderstood. I can’t speak as well as I write my songs. Sometimes it takes me ages to even find the right words for a conversation maybe thats why I prefer singing haha
