UK-based artist Native James…real name Aaron James has released his new single ‘Hammer’ which is out now on Saviour Recordings. He spoke to us about his new single, hometown and much more:

When did you begin songwriting and recording music?

When I was around 14. I never used to write lyrics so most of the time they would be freestyle songs or I’d record it like that then release it.

What is your earliest musical memory?

Hmm I’d have to say church.. growing up in a household that’s Christian you hear music all the time from early on.

Your new single ‘Hammer’ is out now on your new label Saviour Music. What was the story/inspiration behind the track?

It is indeed, shout out Saviour Music! … without going too crazy it’s about a time in my life where things were a bit manic …. I wanted to bring a nostalgic feel with some of the lyrics where people from any background can relate though…

Where did you record the single and who produced it?

We recorded it at Saviour Music recording studio, and James Curtis-Thomas produced the tracks! I can’t wait to show you more of what we have been working on.

The single is accompanied by an official music video. What was the thought process behind the video and who directed it?

We wanted to create something simple but effective with this work. I knew i had come from a grime background but I wanted to blend the two and out came this video that we have now! … My boy, my manager Reece Salvadori is the director behind this video and will be for future videos to come!

Who created/designed the single artwork?

Reece Salvadori! Shout out to Grade A Art.

Do you have any favoured stage instruments, effects, pedals, microphones etc?

I love a good intro! If you have good intro music leading into the 1st track it just sets the vibe and tone instantly.

Where is your hometown and could you please describe it in five words?

So it’s a bit mad because I’m originally from Bedford, moved to Ipswich, then moved to London, then back to Ipswich, but I’d say Ipswich is.

Peaceful
Lively
Vibrant
Artistic
Positive

Do you have any plans for live shows in Europe/UK in 2024?

We do indeed. All will be revealed soon!

You are given the opportunity to write the score for a film adaptation of a novel that you enjoy. Which novel is it and why?

Darren Shan – Lord Loss. One of my favourite authors growing up! The Demonata Saga was intense!

Who are some of your musical influences? Do you have any recommendations?

I like to explore many genres of music to find inspiration. But I’d say Korn for their aggression and vampiric type feel, I’ve always ****ed with it … Ghetts is my favourite UK rapper, he has influenced my way of lyricism for years … Polaris’ new album is awesome, you should definitely go check it out, and BMTH’s new album too!

How do you look after your voice?

Honey and a shot of whiskey (it works for me lol)

Do you have any further music releases planned for 2024?

We do indeed… an EP is on the way!

What makes Native James happy and what makes you unhappy?

I love being on stage I feel like I’m working different person and can just be with likeminded people where We can all share a moment.

I dislike Rishi Sunak. I think he’s a bit of a bumbahole to be honest.
