The Overtones – 20 Questions

Intro

Timmy Matley

  • Suggest two or three great drum intro’s to songs or instrumentals (any genre) (song /artist/ source album)

I would have to say Steve Wonder ‘Superstition’. It’s an iconic drum intro in my eyes. If music was an Angel it would be him. Also love ‘Rolling In the Deep’ Adele – modern day classic for me. And to end on a classic drum outro lets just say the duff duffs at the end of EastEnders.

  • Name an album or a couple of albums where the cover or artwork could have been better, in your humble opinion….give any thoughts around this.

You’re probably asking the wrong Overtone this as I really think you have a look at an artist artwork with an open mind . Yes you may really like it or not really like it but that’s all down to personal taste and what makes you tick . I always enjoy artwork that pops off the shelf for me.

  • Is there a song that both you and your Mum or Dad really like? Or liked?

My mam loves Bette Midler and Dolly Parton and I have to say both of those woman can really tell a story in a song. ‘Wind Beneath My Wings’ and ‘Jolene’ are examples of good story telling in my eyes.

  • Where in the world in your opinion is live music best received? What venues appeal?

I have to say I enjoy going to Ireland for obvious reason as I get to go home and see my family in Co Cork . I also love Scotland, Wales, and generally the north of England . I love a good hard working class city and connect with that cause I’m from one . I always appreciate fans who save their hard earn cash to come to a show . I always want to give an audience a great night out no matter where we are.

Bonus Question- What’s your favourite track on the new album and why?

I’m proud of our original ‘This Christmas’ , its really catchy and I know this cause I played it for my friends and they rung me the next day singing it. That’s always a nice feeling . I also ‘Love Santa Claus Is Coming To Town’. It builds and builds, I love the arrangement of this song.

Lachie Chapman

  • What was it like growing up in Australia?

Australia was a great place for a kid to grow up. We lived by the sea, so my parents threw me into the water when I was 18 months old and I’ve been a bit of a dolphin ever since. We all used to play in the streets in the sunshine and blue sky where we lived and I’m not sure those days are still happening in Sydney anymore to be honest.

  • Name a recording (an album maybe) that really ‘grew’ on you and has ended up as essential listening? What is it about this recording that you value?

The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill. All killer, no filler. What an album??!! I still go back to it every now and then with the intention of listening to a track or two, but that album makes it so easy and pleasurable to listen to all the songs in one hit from start to finish.

  • Which artist did you go to see perform with low expectations but ended up impressed? Where and when was this?

I don’t think I would go to a gig with low expectations. If I had low expectations of an artist I probably wouldn’t buy their CD, which means I wouldn’t buy a concert ticket.

  • Has a radio DJ anywhere (and any era) ever impressed you and if so why?

I once did an interview where the DJ saw my name, spelled ‘Lachie’ (it’s short for Lachlan and sounds like ‘Lockie’) and he said ‘Here we have La Shee from The Overtones!’ It was brilliant, the listeners must have thought a drag act was about to come on. Kudos to the DJ for giving me the giggles.

  • Bonus Question- What’s your favourite track on the new album and why?

I have a soft spot for ‘Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas’, it’s really stripped back, which for me, allows all the vocals to shine through and take centre stage.

Mike Crawshaw

  • Name a great recording including in the title 1/ Red 2/ White 3/ Blue (artist / title / source album for each please) and explain why you’ve chosen those recordings

Red Sail In Sunset – Nat King Cole

A beautiful song from back in the day and frankly you can go wrong with a little NKC White Christmas – The Overtones – Good Ol Fashioned Christmas

Of course this had to be included. I love our version and I’m proud to included it in our album. Blue Lines – Massive Attack – Blue Lines

I’ve been a huge Massive Attack fan for years. And this album in particular still gets played regularly.

  • Did you enjoy school? Whether you did or not, which song reminds you of schooldays (artist / title / source album)?

Michael Jackson – Dangerous. I used to pretend I was Michael with black shoes and white sock doing a really bad moon walk at school discos.

  • When is the new album ‘Good Ol’ Fashioned Christmas’ released?

The new album ‘Good Ol’ Fashioned Christmas’ is released on Friday 27th November 2015 and will will be touring it across the UK in December.

  • Have the others in the group ever worn anything that makes you laugh?

Not really. Lachie has an enormous fur coat that we give him a little ribbing for but he does pull it off.

  • Bonus Question- What’s your favourite track on the new album and why?

My favourite song on the album is ‘Santa Clause is Coming to Town’. We go for it towards the end, singing all out! It’s a big Christmas party track.

Darren Everest

  • Name an actor or actress who made a listenable song recording – and what’s the appeal?

Gonna have to go with Patrick Swayze. Iconic songs from an iconic film ‘Dirty Dancing’!

  • Your favourite song or instrumental (any genre) with the title including the word 1/ ‘One’, 2/ ‘Five’ and ‘Seven’? Explain your choices

* ‘Can’t Be Messing Around’ by Craig David. Love this song and it’s the only one I can think of with these numbers in!!

  • What apparel suits you and what doesn’t?

Hmm… tough one. I like to mix my style between smart depending on where I am and what I’m doing, and obviously when I’m with the band. And street when I’m more casual and in jeans and trainers. I love fashion tho so love mixing it up from time to time! I wouldn’t wear baggy trousers with shoes!! Strictly skinny/slim fit for me. I love the tailored italian fit.

  • Suggest a song that reminds you of your childhood – and why might this be?

Let’s go with Usher. Any song from ‘8701’. Or Boyz 2 Men from the Evolution album!! I can’t choose! Used to sit in my room singing these songs dreaming of performing on stage one day.

  • Bonus Question- What’s your favourite track on the new album and why?

* I’m gonna go with ‘Driving Home for Christmas’ it wasn’t an obvious choice but one I was desperate for us to try. I’m so happy with the end product and hope the fans will love it!
