London-based, Norwegian-born artist IVY (formerly bby ivy) is ushering in a new era of unapologetic pop with a fearless reinvention. Her new single ‘Let My Hair Down’ is out now and she chatted to us all about the new song and more:

When did you begin singing?

I started at a very young age, singing full volume into a hairbrush, fully convinced I was Hannah Montana. It was never just for fun—I always knew it was what I wanted to do with my life. I wrote my first song about a school crush when I was 8 years old.

What is your earliest musical memory?

Being curled up in the backseat while my dad played Queen and The Beatles. He loved the classics, and that’s how I first fell in love with music. With a little help from my Hannah Montana obsession, of course.

You have released your new single ‘Let My Hair Down’. What was the story/inspiration behind the track?

It’s about shedding the weight of perfection and letting go. It’s sexy, defiant, chaotic—in the best way. The track kicks off my Blonde Era—my most fearless chapter yet. It’s a reminder to stop playing it safe and just be.

Where did you record the single and who produced it?

I recorded it London with producer Nova Blue and The Nicholas, who fully understood my vision—we wanted that hypnotic, clubby slow-burn that feels like a secret whispered in a nightclub bathroom.

Do you have any interesting, funny or memorable stories from the recording sessions?

The Nicholas laid down the coolest bass line and it just unlocked everything. From there, the sass and flirtation in the lyrics poured out naturally. We had so much fun writing it.

Did you use any particular instruments, microphones, recording equipment to help you get a particular sound/tone for the record?

The vocals were recorded through a Neumann mic, and we really leaned into the bass—it carries the whole track. It needed to feel seductive and alive.

Do you have plans to have a visualiser accompany the single?

Yes! The full music video is already out. It’s Y2K-coded, bratty, and chaotic. Think mini skirts, metallics, low-rise everything.

Which of your tracks hear you at your…

a) Happiest: “Fever”—it’s playful, sexy, and a bit unhinged.
b) Angriest: “Sweet Like Honey”— my debut, a diss track to my old label. I didn’t hold back.
c) Most reflective: “Play Pretend” – it’s full of sadness. I’m at a completely different space in my life now, but I still love the song.

Do you have any further music releases planned for 2025?

Definitely. “Let My Hair Down” is just the start. There’s more music, videos, and a full EP on the way. I’ll also be playing shows across Europe and Asia.

What two things do you hope to have achieved once you have left the stage?

That someone in the room felt seen.
And that I gave all of myself, even the messy parts.

Do you have any favoured stage instruments, effects, pedals, microphones etc?

I love the Shure SM7B—it gives me that warm, intimate tone. My vocal chain is usually soaked in reverb and a little delay to make it feel dreamy and immersive.

Where is your hometown and could you please describe it in five words?

Oslo, Norway: green, calm, cold, grounding, nostalgic.

How do you look after your voice?

Ginger shots, vocal warmups, and being disciplined about sleep. And I’ve learned to love silence when I need it.

You are given the opportunity to write the score for a film adaptation of a novel that you enjoy. Which novel is it and why?

Magnolia Parks. I’d write a sexy, unhinged track for that beautiful mess of a love story. Let’s just say I can relate.

What makes IVY happy and what makes you unhappy?

Good lighting, addictive melodies, and friends you can sit in silence with—scrolling, dreaming, existing—without needing to fill the space.
Unhappy? People who treat music like background noise.
