Live-wired alternative trio, ORCHID SYMMETRY, are poised to step up with their evocative new self-titled EP, which lands everywhere on Friday 5th September 2025. We caught up with the band to learn more about their new EP:

Who is in Orchid Symmetry, how did you meet and what do you play?

Damian: I’m Damian Wilde – vocals and guitar.

Will: Will Spears, bass and backing vocals.

Chris: Chris Hill – drums and the occasional scream from the kit.

Damian: Chris and I met through a band ad website, and Will was a mate of mine from a previous job. We all came together with the same goal: to write original music. One of those right-place, right-time moments. Once we jammed, it was clear we’d found something that clicked.

What is your earliest musical memory?

Chris: Building a drum kit out of ice cream tubs when I was four and playing along to Queen’s “One Vision.”

Will: Learning to play “The House of the Rising Sun” on guitar at age six.

Damian: Weekends with my dad as a kid introduced me to the guitar. We’d go on camping trips with his mates, and someone always brought a guitar and played songs by The Jam or Stereophonics.

When did you begin songwriting?

Damian: I started in my teens after getting involved in bands. If I didn’t like what I was hearing, I’d quietly write my own songs.

Will: I began jamming out riffs and melodies on guitar in my early teens, and by my late teens, I was writing more structured songs.

Chris: I got into it during GCSE music. The composition software helped me build ideas in small blocks. That made it easier to jam with an acoustic guitar and hum over the top.

You’ve just released your latest single, “Like The Sun.” What inspired the track?

Damian: It all started with that riff—gritty, playful, and slightly dangerous. The tone was set before the lyrics came. The track’s about embracing the parts of yourself you don’t always admit are there: guilty pleasures, hidden cravings… the raw stuff that makes us human. A tug-of-war between shadow and sunlight.

The single has an official music video. What was the vision behind it and who directed it?

Chris: We wanted something raw and honest. We shot it at The Cave, where we recorded the EP, using just our phones. Damo edited it himself.

Damian: I’m all for new tech, but I didn’t want to lean on AI. It’s gritty, simple, and totally DIY—definitely not Hollywood.

Will: It needed to match the vibe of the song. Between the three of us, with very limited video skills, I think we pulled off something effective.

Your new self-titled EP is out Friday 5th September 2025. How did you approach its creation?

Damian: We wanted it to feel big and full of energy—like our live shows. Each track has its own darker vibe, and we wanted to reflect that in the recording.

Where was the EP recorded and who produced it?

Chris: At The Cave in Par, Cornwall—a brilliant, off-the-beaten-path space. John Logan produced the EP. He’s got real wisdom and gave us invaluable feedback. He felt like a fourth member during the sessions.

Any memorable or funny moments from the recording?

Chris: Watching Damo record a take of “Cannonball” with his hand in his pocket, casually chugging an open D. Peak inspiration.

Will: Hearing the first mix playback in the studio, and Damian let out this random grunt after a track ended. Totally unexpected and had us all in stitches.

Damian: There were loads of great moments, but the most memorable was how some songs transformed when recorded. It was eye-opening.

Any specific gear or techniques that helped you shape the EP’s sound?

Chris: I used a Mapex Shadow snare, it’s got a dark, moody tone that suited the vibe perfectly.

Will: I used a multi-effects pedal to shift between a driven tone and big fuzz for the dynamic sections. John, who’s also a bassist, gave great advice on getting the best tone.

Damian: I used a mix of guitars. For “Lies They Tell You,” I went for a twangy Telecaster tone. For “Cannonball,” it was heavy humbuckers. Vocally, I experimented a lot, trying different deliveries and layering backing tracks.

Which tracks show you at your happiest, angriest, and most reflective?

Damian:

a) Happiest – “Sadistic”. It’s about dropping your guard and embracing life.

b) Angriest – “Lies They Tell You.” It’s a rare political track from us, driven by frustration with the state of the world.

c) Most reflective – “Feeding the Wolves.” It explores fear and the choice between giving in or rising above it.

Was it a difficult EP to write?

Will: Not really. We’ve learned a lot from previous sessions and knew what we wanted. John made the process smooth. Some songs have changed so much, like “Feeding the Wolves,” which is a rework of an earlier version, but overall, it flowed. Years of hard work brought us to this point.

Who designed the artwork?

Chris: We tried to avoid AI but used it to create a rough concept. My niece, Lara Hill, took that and gave it a human touch. Damo and Will helped refine it, and we ended up with a design we all love.

Where is your hometown, and can you describe it in five words?

Chris: Taunton, Somerset – Historic, Canal, Cricket, Cider, Hilly. Not all descriptive, but they capture the place.

Will: Truro, Cornwall – Historic, Compact, Vibrant, Cornish, Pasty.

Damian: Dewsbury, West Yorkshire – Historical, Multicultural, Gritty, Busy, Changing.

How do you look after your voices?

Damian: Hydration is key. I also push myself to reach both higher and lower registers.

Will: I stay within my natural range and avoid straining—pretty easy when you’re doing backing vocals.

Any live dates planned in 2025/2026?

Chris: Loads in the works. Next up is The Junction in Plymouth on 11th July. Best way to keep up is through our socials.

What two things do you hope to have achieved by the time you leave the stage?

Damian: I want to keep people hooked with no dull moments. Keep delivering musical punches.

Will: A solid musical performance. If even one person says something positive after, I’m happy.

Chris: I want people to leave thinking, “I’m so glad I came,” or even, “I’ve just found a new favourite band.” Support your local scene, it means the world to us.

Any favourite stage instruments, pedals, or gear?

Will: I love a fat, mid-heavy fuzzy bass tone. As long as I can dial that in, I’m good.

Chris: I use a Mapex Saturn V kit with Zildjian cymbals. My favourite is the 20″ A Custom EFX crash, gets the nod from the drum nerds.

Damian: I love the Telecaster, it’s lightweight and great for moving around. But my Squier Jazzmaster is a beast with all the extras.

If you could write the score for any novel-turned-film, what would it be?

Chris: The Forever War by Joe Haldeman. We could create something dark and haunting to match the main character’s isolation in time.

Damian: Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. The themes of horror, conflict, and the grotesque are perfect for creating brooding songs with flickers of light.

Who are some of your musical influences? Any recommendations?

Chris: Queens of the Stone Age, Muse, System of a Down – rhythm-driven, inventive, and full of energy.

Will: The Prodigy, Pendulum, Arctic Monkeys, Muse – that mix of texture and attitude.

Damian: Bowie, Johnny Cash, Freddie Mercury – iconic voices and huge souls.

What makes you happy—and what doesn’t?

Will: A surprise banger on a playlist that gets you moshing. Not much gets me down… but stubbing a toe is brutal.

Chris: Loud music and a mosh pit. Or a quiet corner and a book. I get annoyed when I want one but end up with the other.

Damian: Getting immersed in a riff or singing at full tilt—that’s joy. But I’m my own worst critic. If a song isn’t working or the performance feels flat, it gets to me. I always want to give 100%, like it’s the last time I’ll perform.
