J Keys Talks New Single, Musical Memories And More

With multiple Top 10 singles on the Official MTV Club Charts and a #1 on the Official Downloads Chart, J KEYS has consistently proven his ability to create records that connect. Now the rising star of the UK dance scene continues to build serious momentum by dropping his brand new track ‘Mad About You’. He spoke to us here:

What is your earliest musical memory?
Listening to Ministry of Sound CD in my dad’s truck when I used to go to work with him as a kid. I was instantly hooked.

When did you begin songwriting?

I started songwriting when I was around 17. I treated my lyric book as a diary. Anything that I had in my mind that was going on in my life I’ve put into my lyrics.

You have your new single ‘Mad About You’ out now. What was the story/inspiration behind the track?

The inspiration and story behind this track is obsession in its pure form, that feeling when you first ever fall in love, when you wake up with a smile on your face, go to sleep with a smile on your face and that person is on your mind 247.

Where did you record the track and who produced it?

I wrote this track while I was sat on a beach watching the sunset, it was a perfect evening after the most perfect day. By then recorded the track at a Studio in Shoreditch London, it was a fun day. I produce the beat myself.

Do you have any interesting, funny or memorable stories from the recording sessions?

I remember once we recorded it we then started watching TikTok dance videos with no sound while the song was playing in the background, me and my friends looked at each other and was like wow I think we have something special here.

Did you use any particular instruments, microphones, recording equipment to help you get a particular sound/tone for the record?

It was nothing particular honestly it was just my standard microphone that I record all my songs on and the beat / instrumental was made on logic. There was just good energy in the room and the perfect vibe to create this song.

You are given the opportunity to write the score for a film adaptation of a novel that you enjoy. Which novel is it and why?

The Great Gatsby – because I find it powerful and in some ways relatable. I think Mad about you would be perfect for that.

What makes J Keys happy and what makes you unhappy?

This is a good question, because at my local gym the guys call me Mr. Happy and tell me I’ve always got a smile on my face and how do I stay so positive all the time?

The truth is I just try to look at everything in a positive way, even when something bad happens, I think to myself okay? That wasn’t meant to happen. The universe is protecting me and when something good happens that’s a blessing from God. But to answer your question, what truly makes me happy is creating. I feel happier when I’m working and achieving than when I’m lounging round the swimming pool. I love to be creative and thrive of it.

And what makes me unhappy- is not getting enough sleep or being hungry lol.
