Makes My Blood Dance (MMBD) are an exciting hybrid of electro-goth, pop-metal and electronic dance music who have already turned heads with their electrifying live performances and several singles promoted with cinematic videos. Having recently released their new single ‘Black Summer’, the band sat down with JLTT:
Who is in Makes My Blood Dance, how did you meet and what do you play?
EV0 – frontman, co-founder, principal songwriter, video director
Jon Kristian – lead guitar, backing vox, mastermind programmer, lighting designer, co-founder, principal songwriter
Spacebaby – Bass, fashionista
G Rex – Beats and brawn
EV0: Jon and I met around 2018 in NYC. We were both in other projects that weren’t quite taking off and someone how the universe brought us together. It took a hot minute to learn to write songs together because Jon comes from a metal background and I’m more pop, musical theater and edm centric. Once we figured out the formula the whole thing started flowing. After the discometal EP we found our producers Mikal Blue (OneRepublic) and Bret “Epic” Mazur (Crazytown) and our sound really evolved which you can hear on our current singles and upcoming debut album on Metropolis Records.
What is your earliest musical memory?
EV0: 2 major ones : sitting on my dad’s lap watching him play piano around age 2 or 3 and then again around age 8 when I auditioned and nailed by first vocal solo in 4th grade. My life pretty much changed after those 2 experiences.
When did you begin songwriting?
EV0: I was always writing and singing along to chords before I was even 10 years old. I was taking piano lessons (thanks Mom!) and also doing my own thing and singing.
You have your new single ‘Black Sumner’ which is out now. What was the story/inspiration behind the track?
EV0: It’s a unique story because I wrote it for someone else originally. The story was about a spurned lover and finding your own strength and resolve. It’s high energy which is classic Makes My Blood Dance but it has a somber tone throughout. Sort of redemption and strength from flying in your own direction. The original idea came from an iconic Hollywood actor who heard our music in the studio in Los Angeles. She wanted to be involved and sent me a poem she wrote that inspired the song. I was super excited and Jon and I took off with the idea but in the end she didn’t want any of her words changed and sort of killed the collaborative energy of what we created. I tried, but eventually just took out any of her contributions, Jon and I made it our own and we ran with it. The producers loved it, it’s a great song.
Where did you record the track and who produced it?
EV0: The album was recorded and produced with Mikal and Bret at Revolver Studios in Los Angeles. They have some incredible equipment and ideas that really shaped our sound. Bringing together Jon and Myself with Bret, Mikal, Engineered by Alex Lebowitz and Dalton Cyr – this was just an incredible team of people that made these songs next level and what you hear now on the record.
Do you have any interesting, funny or memorable stories from the recording sessions?
EV0: I’ve told some of them in previous interviews. Bret is especially funny because he is sort of dry so you’re never sure if he’s kidding or not. Like when Jon Kristian asked to turn the volume down on a listen back and Bret told him to leave. We all sort of froze for a second and then laughed.
Did you use any particular instruments, microphones, recording equipment to help you get a particular sound/tone for the record?
EV0: Of course we did, that’s the chef’s secret recipe sucka. You had to be there to know.
Which of your tracks hear you at your a) happiest, b) angriest and c) most reflective?
EV0: We definitely have a wide range of styles and emotions on this record. Your Little Hand In Mine is certainly the stand out ballad, the most vulnerable and intimate in my mind. Then you have a lot of sexually charged songs like Time And A Place & Heavy Metal Armour. There are also some real bangers in there to break a sweat in whatever way you like, tracks like Lately (Feat Macy Gray) and Spin You Around get a big response live.
Was it a difficult song to write?
EV0: I personally struggled the most with Heavy Metal Armour because it has a lot of parts and is not a typical pop structure. Mikal Blue (producer) was pretty adament that it was a very strong song and it turned out to be the lead off single for the record with a pretty steam uncensored music video (check Makes My Blood Dance YouTube Channel).
Do you have a video to accompany the release?
EV0: We love making music videos and have quite a few of them on our site and Youtube Channel. Black Summer is the newest music video which is the 1st video to feature our most recent lineup and includes Spacebaby (bass) and G Rex (Pulse).
Where is your hometown and could you please describe it in five words?
EV0: We’re a touring band. Five words: Home is where you sleep
How do you look after your voices?
EV0: Stay away from alcohol, sleep, and lots of love.
Do you have any live dates planned in the UK/Europe in 2026?
EV0: We are in talks now with agents and artists in Europe with offers pending for early 2027 EU tours. Of course no one likes you to talk about it until it’s officially announced. Sign up for our text app on makesmyblooddance.com and be the first to know.
What two things do you hope to have achieved once you have left the stage?
EV0: Nothing, anything that happened is in the past. I’m headed to the merch table to hang with our friends, family, fans, and f@ck ups.
Do you have any favoured stage instruments, effects, pedals, microphones etc?
EV0: Everything we use is our favorite because we’re in the business of living the dream. I love my Airline 3p Gold Flake guitar and my mic which remains a secret.
You are given the opportunity to write the score for a film adaptation of a novel that you enjoy. Which novel is it and why?
EV0: Good one! Here are some of my favorite novels but many of them are already movies! Here you go: the next Twilight film, any spin off from GOT, Dancing with the Stars (the movie – directed by EV0), Rocky Horror (remake directed by EV0). I love period pieces also, so anything on Netflix that would be an orchestral arrangement of one of our songs. Jon Kristian and I can pretty much do anything.
Do you have any further music releases planned for 2026?
EV0: Most likely a visual for the Time And A Place (EDM REMIX) which is track 10 on our album. We may have another music video for this record in us as well.
Who are some of your musical influences? Do you have any recommendations?
EV0: Right now I’m listening to: Processor, Dance With The Dead, Mercy Girl, Max Styler, Klangphonics and many more.
What makes Makes My Blood Dance happy and what makes you unhappy?
EV0: Touring makes us happy, hanging out with our fans and friends makes us happy, making music together makes us happy, eating good dinners on the Betty (our bus) makes us happy. Unhappy is not relevant.
