UK alternative hard rockers Amongst Liars return with their gripping new single and video, Underneath The Surface, and they chatted to us:
Who is in Amongst Liars, how did you meet and what do you play?
Well that would be myself (Leo Burdett), Adam Oarton on drums, Ross Towner and Brummeo on the keys! Adam and I have been playing together for years! A while later Ross joined and we became amongst liars. When we wanted to develop our sound a bit more we recruited Brummeo a couple years after
What is your earliest musical memory?
Brummeo – my parents used to throw massive parties back in the day. There are a lot of musicians in the family so we would often be up to the wee hours jamming out with the karaoke on!
Leo – My parents banging out some classics at parties. They would always play Meatloaf and Queen! Bat out of Hell is one of my fave songs because of that haha
When did you begin songwriting?
From when we were all kids I think! Music has always been a part of our journeys in various ways which is why I think we gel so well!
You have your single ‘Underneath The Surface’ out now. What was the story/inspiration behind the track?
The single is a positive message about trying to move forward with a situation and even though you have had struggles with whatever it may be that you can draw a line and start fresh and give it another go
Underneath The Surface is about finding the strength to restart when things haven’t gone your way. Whether it’s relationships, mistakes, setbacks or life in general it’s a reminder that you can draw a line under the past, start fresh, and give it another shot.
Where did you record the track and who produced it?
That would be our good friend David R Jones up in Manchester at Red City Recordings. Former Heaven’s Basement Guitar player!
Do you have any interesting, funny or memorable stories from the recording sessions?
Once we all bought food for the Airbnb and Ross brought some spring onions for himself. Anyway, someone threw them in the bin. Well….I’ve never seen a man lose his s*** over some onions so much in my life! Apparently the looked old but as Ross rightly said it’s down to him to be the person to decide that considering he bought the product 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Anyway it’s been a topic of laughs since!
Did you use any particular instruments, microphones, recording equipment to help you get a particular sound/tone for the record?
Brummeo – I write some of the demos via Logic pro X and then translate those sounds to my performance keys and work with Dave to develop those ideas and make them sound awesome!
Which of your tracks hear you at your a) happiest, b) angriest and c) most reflective?
Black Days is always fun to have a massive jam in the middle 8, Repair Myself we’re at our most raw and angriest, and most Reflective I’d say our new single Under The Surface
Was it a difficult track to write?
Leo – Not particularly for Underneath The Surface. One of the few that stayed pretty much the same from demo sessions as it felt so strong.
Where is your hometown and could you please describe it in five words?
Brighton- Different, loud, off-kilter, beautiful, rustic
How do you look after your voices?
Leo – Rip cig and beer all weekend seems to work fine haha! Not true…just on occasion….but generally I have a Vocal Steamer that I hit every other day. Practice warm ups at home in between practices and always warm up before the gigs and recordings properly.

Do you have any further music releases planned?
Leo – Not this year but into the studio to record this December and January
What two things do you hope to have achieved once you have left the stage?
As in after a gig or when we retire? Ahaha. For the former we want to chat to the crowd and make sure they had an awesome time and maybe have an after party! For the latter we’ll retire when we’re dead!
Do you have any favoured stage instruments, effects, pedals, microphones etc?
Leo – I use the helix floor and it’s a game changer since swapping from amps. Also Jackson 7 string for Repair Myself!
You are given the opportunity to write the score for a film adaptation of a novel that you enjoy. Which novel is it and why?
Brummeo- Maybe the movie 300. Reckon we could make a sick soundtrack!
Who are some of your musical influences? Do you have any recommendations?
Leo- Linkin Park, BMTH, Alice In Chains to name a few!! Bands we have played with who are a massive inspiration are all the guys from the Ayron Jones band. Real work horses!!
What makes Amongst Liars happy and what makes you unhappy?
Brummeo – being on the road and playing with new people and exploring new cities! As for unhappy? Any time we’re not playing or writing music!
