Australian four-piece Avalanche have released their latest single ‘Hell’s Getting Hotter With You’ and we wanted to sit down and ask them some questions in JLTT style:

Who is in Avalanche and what do they play?

My name is Steven Campbell I’m the lead vocalist and bass player. My wife Veronica Campbell is the lead guitarist, Ryan Roma is our drummer and back up vocalist, and Arthur Divis is our rhythm guitarist and second back up vocalist.

Where and when did you all meet?

Ryan and Veronica met each other through school and started playing together from then, they spent a few years playing with different players until they found me. I first met up with em at Veronica’s garage where we used to rehearse as well as at the steel factory Ryan’s dad worked at after hours, it made everything sound massive! Soon after I joined, we auditioned Arthur and the rest is history.

Do you have any favoured stage instruments, effects, pedals etc?

We’re not a band that uses any effects or pedals besides a tuning pedal, although I’ve only recently just picked up a Bass Soul Food overdrive pedal for my bass just to help get some distortion on my bass when in smaller venues where I can’t crank my amp too much. I’ve been finding I can get the tone I’ve always wanted without pushing the amp to its absolute limit each time and it seems to be working for me at the moment. But yeah, you won’t catch V or Arthur using a pedal!

Where is your hometown and could you please describe it in five words?

Well originally I grew up in Noosa Queensland and if I had to describe it in 5 words I’d say. Beautiful, beachy, sunny, happy and honestly a little insincere haha. Classic small Aussie bogan hippie town!

You have also released the single ‘Hell’s Getting Hotter With You’. What was the story/inspiration behind the song?

There’s a few different connections I played around with when writing this song. It’s definitely about the story of a toxic relationship but how enticing those might be at times. We used bonnie and Clyde and old west kinda imagery in both the track and the video to sort of mirror that as well in a way, like a natural born killers kind of thing too. V wrote most of the riffs and its something we’ve been playing live in one way or another for a while now until we tightened and polished it up in recording and we can’t wait for everyone to hear it!

Do you have any plans for live shows in Europe/UK in 2024?

For sure, UK and Europe are definitely in our sights after our Japan tour this March. We’re working on an album and have big plans to launch it and tour overseas, it’s just a matter of time, opportunity… and money haha whether we can swing it for this year or next! But rest assured we’re coming sooner or later!

How do you look after your voices?

I follow a fairly typical vocal routine in my spare time. It usually involves warm ups and stretching the vocal chords to begin with, just by doing exercises for about 15-20 mins. Then practicing the songs I need to practice and almost important of all is a good cool down routine as well. It’s almost as important as warming up, as long as you’re doing those three things each time you practice you will find that your voice will improve and constantly get better. Breaks are also a necessity if you feel vocal fatigue as well.

Who are some of your musical influences? Do you have any recommendations?

I grew up listening to a lot of a rock and metal, Metallica and Pantera were the first two bands I really became obsessed with. Dimebag Darryl was the reason I wanted to get good at playing leads on guitar. But apart from that ACDC, the Angels, Rose Tattoo all those great Aussie pub rock bands. They were always around and having their songs get played. Recently I’ve been loving the Soutber River Band from WA, we supported em last year and been watching them on their meteoric rise in the industry the past year or so. I’d definitely recommend them for a good newer rock band.

What makes Avalanche happy and what makes you unhappy?

We love playing shows really, we’d be happy with just playing shows for the rest of our lives and nothing else. We love writing music as well and being able to play our own songs in front of audiences is really what makes us tick. Anything that gets in the way of that generally makes us unhappy. We love just playing live music, and I don’t think anything will ever change for us.
