Singer-songwriter EMMMA has released her new single ‘Wednesday’s Child’ and will tour the UK this month opening for JC Stewart. We chatted to her all about her music and more:
When did you begin songwriting?
I wrote my very first song when I was 12 years old on my parents piano in NYC. It was called “Lights” and it was about the light shining through the window.
What is your earliest musical memory?
I remember being in toddler music class and learning how to sight read different notes! I then went on to learn violin at age 3-ish and I started on a cardboard cutout violin- I think my family still has it!
You new previously released the track ‘Playing It Safe’ is out now. What was the story/inspiration behind that song?
I had felt that I had become stagnant in my life, and I was missing out on a lot of new experiences because I was playing everything a bit too safe. While I was writing this song, I was realizing that I had to step out of my comfort zone in order to make something really special out of my life.
Where did you record the single and who produced it?
I wrote and recorded this song in Brooklyn, NY with producer Doug Schadt.
Who wrote the new single?
I wrote this song along with my producer Doug and our co-writer, Emily Haber.
The single is accompanied by an official music video. What was the thought process behind the video and who directed it?
Holly Wood is my creative director and it was her idea to pour the milk over my head – I definitely wasn’t playing it safe! It was filmed by Jesse Lin.
Your new single ‘Wednesday’s Child’ is out now. Could you please tell us about that track?
I’ve never cried to a song I’ve written before, but I did then. It perfectly encapsulated how I felt in that relationship – the anger, the frustration, the sadness and empathy. And it still hits me in that way each time, I think that’s what makes it so special.
What two things do you hope to have achieved once you have left the stage?
Hopefully I never have to leave the stage! But I just want to create music for the rest of my life that inspires others and reminds them that they aren’t alone in whatever they’re going through.
Do you have any favoured stage instruments, effects, pedals, microphones etc?
I love using my Nord keyboard and Fender Stratocaster guitar, paired with my Helix Stomp FX pedal.
Where is your hometown and could you please describe it in five words?
I am from Westport, Connecticut and I’d say it’s tranquil, coastal, beautiful, seasonal and open minded.
How do you look after your voice?
I like to do vocal warm ups and I’ll steam my vocal chords if I’m feeling especially tired.
You are given the opportunity to write the score for a film adaptation of a novel that you enjoy. Which novel is it and why?
I would lose my mind if I got to score the ACOTAR series!!
Who are some of your musical influences? Do you have any recommendations?
I am deeply inspired by Bon Iver, Phoebe Bridgers, Mk.Gee, Holly Humberstone and Joni Mitchell. I recommend all of these – especially Mk.Gee if you haven’t heard him yet!
Do you have any further music releases planned for 2025?
I released singles up to a 4 song EP last November and then many more in 2025!
Was it a difficult song to write?
This one was quite fun to write, the vibe and mood of the song has come very far since we first started writing and I’m really happy with the result.
What makes Emmma happy and what makes you unhappy?
Being surrounded by family, friends, animals and music makes me incredibly happy! I don’t like being overwhelmed in spaces I’m unfamiliar in, that definitely makes me unhappy!
