Golden Robot Records proudly announces the second single ‘Policy Of Truth’ from Kurt Frohlich’s highly anticipated sophomore album ‘1987’. We spoke to the man himself about the new release, musical memories and more:
When did you begin singing/songwriting?
I started writing songs at the same time I started learning Guitar when I was 16,piecing simple chords together. They weren’t any good so I never finished them. Later on, I wrote my own songs for my band The Loving Dead in the mid 90s and looked for a lead singer. I couldn’t find one I liked, so I just started singing myself and I got better as is got more experience.
What is your earliest musical memory?
My biggest memory is when my cousin who was in a band in the mid 70s bought me my first kiss album, their first self titled album. I loved it before I even put it on my record player. That’s when I fell in love with music and rock ‘n’ roll. I was probably around 6 years old.
You have your new single ‘Policy Of Truth’ which is out now. What was the story/inspiration behind the track?
I love the way Depeche Mode creates a mood with their music. I discovered Keyboards from the 70s and 80s including the Oberheim and just fell in love with them. They opened up a whole different pallet of writing that I haven’t had in the past. Doing a cover of Policy of Truth fit in with the other songs I was writing so well, so I decided to include it on the album. I put some rock guitars on it to give it some more edge. Hope you guys dig it.
Was it a difficult song to write?
I didn’t write it. It’s a Depeche Mode song. It is revamped though.
Will the track be accompanied by a visualiser?
I’m not sure, but they will probably be a teaser video with it.
Where did you record the single and who produced it?
I recorded it in my home studio. Jun Murakawa from Los Angeles co-produced it with me. He’s worked with a lot of great artists including Trent Reznor, Jerry Cantrell, and Slipknot to name a few.
Do you have any interesting, funny or memorable stories from the recording sessions?
Nothing exciting about the recording process. I recorded everything myself.
Did you use any particular instruments, microphones, recording equipment to help you get a particular sound/tone for the record?
The drum machines I used are classics. The Linn was used by countless artists including Prince, Michael Jackson and the Human League. I also used a Simmons drum machine. Both have that classic 80s sound.
Which of your tracks hear you at your a) happiest, b) angriest and c) most reflective?
The album definitely has a dark sound. Not really a “happy” track on it.
“The Last Time” is an angrier song about trolls on the internet, that hide behind their screens to put down and attack others.
Halfway There is a reflective song about life and death. I’m at the age now where you start losing people closer to you and it talks about those hard events.
Do you have any further music releases planned for 2025?
Nothing right now but always talking about things so you never know.
What two things do you hope to have achieved once you have left the stage?
I have no plans to leave the stage. Right now I’m on stage full time. I’m gonna keep doing it until it’s not fun anymore.
Do you have any favoured stage instruments, effects, pedals, microphones etc?
I love all my Les Pauls. I have a 1972 tobacco burst which is my favorite. I also love an MXR Phase 90 phaser pedal which I use a lot live. I use Sennheiser microphones live. I love the high mid range they capture.
I’m endorsed by GHS Guitar Strings, and Mogami cables, which I use on everything I do.
How do you look after your voice?
I’ve taken vocal lessons from numerous teachers that have helped me with proper technique so you don’t lose your voice.
Everywhere I go I ask singers I admire about what they do to look after their voice. Jeff Scott Soto, Jizzy Pearl, and some other guys have given me great advice, along with learning what works best for me.
I drink lots of water, get enough sleep, use a personal humidifier and most importantly always warm up before every show or studio session.
You are given the opportunity to write the score for a film adaptation of a novel that you enjoy. Which novel is it and why?
Ohh that’s a tough one. I’m really into classic horror and love the movie and sound score to Susperia done by Goblin. It would be cool to do an adaptation of what they did on that movie. It’s pretty perfect as it is though.
Where is your hometown and could you please describe it in five words?
I was born in Edmonton, Alberta Canada. I would describe it as.
Friendly, considerate, hockey loving and cold!!
Do you have any live dates in the UK/Europe planned for 2025/2026?
None as of now but I’d love to come over there and play! Promoters hit me up!
What makes Kurt Frolich happy and what makes you unhappy?
Unhappy, hmmm. Politics.
Playing music is my life blood.
I love horror movies, craft beer and great coffee.
What makes me the happiest is my family, including my dog Jeta, They’re what makes everything worth while.
