Mancunian singer-songwriter Lusaint today unveils her latest single ‘Joking’. Following the release of her stellar track ‘Neon Lights’ earlier this year and her hugely successful, sell-out UK headline tour in March, Lusaint’s latest track offers another taste of her upcoming EP The Apothecary, due for release later this spring. We talked to her about the track, her voice and more:
You have released your new single ‘Joking’. What was the story/inspiration behind the track?
It’s about being somebody’s second choice in a relationship, you know that there’s always been somebody else. Quite a dark theme and based on a friend’s experience.
Where did you record the single and who produced it?
I recorded it at Dairy Studios in Brixton and it was produced by Bjorn Woodhall and Oliver Nelson
Do you have any interesting, funny or memorable stories from the recording sessions?
I love that most of the music is always written on a tiny little Spanish guitar and for some reason I always seem to be at my most creative when writing with it! Then transitioning from such a small sound to a band is such an amazing feeling!
Did you use any particular instruments, microphones, recording equipment to help you get a particular sound/tone for the record?
I used a Neumann u87 microphone which I absolutely love to record through, it has a real vintage sound and works the best with my tone, especially for a song like Joking.
Was it a difficult song to write?
I wrote it fairly quickly within a few hours. Or at least the frame of the song was composed. I tend to come back to lyrics as I subconsciously sing certain lyrics into my melodies that usually have a hidden meaning!
Do you have any further music releases planned for 2025?
Lots of releases planned this year, I’ll be releasing my EP, The Apothecary amongst several singles on that EP. Very excited to keep sharing!
Do you have any UK/European live dates planned for 2025?
I have many shows this year including the UK, Amsterdam, Germany, France and Italy. Very excited to perform with my band again!
You receive free tickets to see an artist that you have always wanted to see live. Which artist and why?
I think Bon Iver actually. There’s something so beautiful and timeless about his performance and music. I’m listening to his new album a lot and as unique and almost chaotic as it is, it’s still very easy listening and beautifully coordinated.
When did you first start performing and songwriting?
I started performing around 8 or 9 years ago. Doing small events here and there to get my voice out there. Then songwriting came around 4 years ago. I’ve always been interested in writing but started writing more poems when I was young.
Last year your released the song ‘Sweet Tooth’. What is the story/inspiration behind the track?
The song was supposed to light hearted about genuinely having a sweet tooth and my love for sugar but as we were writing the songs, it slowly became more about love. Having to let someone go at the wrong time, but right person kind of motive.
Do you have any interesting, funny or memorable stories from the track’s recording sessions?
I think my producer found it pretty wild how much I wanted to write about my love for cinnamon buns. But he had the same obsession to be fair, so it was a good icebreaker.
Where did you record the song and who produced it?
Recorded at Eve Studios in Manchester. Produced by Cameron Warren
What is your earliest musical memory?
Performing at a Christmas concert and being chosen to sing a solo part. I was so shy so it was a big deal for me to overcome that.
Where is your hometown and could you please describe it in five words?
My hometown where I grew up is in Stretford in Manchester. 5 words – community, United, comfort, nostalgic, security
What music do you enjoy listening to? Do you have any recommendations?
I love listening to all kinds of music, at the moment I’m listening to Billie Holiday- In my Solitude is my favourite. Bon Iver’s album ‘For Emma’ is also my go to.
How do you look after your voice?
Eating healthy and exercising is annoyingly always the way to keep my voice in check! Haha. I notice a huge difference with that. And I steam regularly along with honey and lemon tea.
What makes Lusaint happy and what makes you unhappy?
Singing always makes me happy. Unhappy is being away from my cat and my family for too long
