Radio DJ Mick Brown has joined forces with an array of music artists from the 80s and 90s for the new ‘ReDiscovered Allstars’ album due for release on Friday 24th November 2023. He sat down to tell us all about it:
You have worked with Mauro Dirago alongside a host of popular 80s and 90s artists for your forthcoming ‘Rediscovered Allstars’ album release. What is the story behind how this album came about?
Mauro asked me to get involved as he and top producer Yoad Nevo had already made plans to get 80’s and 90’s popstars recording new and classic songs, I remember playing all these stars back in the great Capital days and even today on my Radio Jackie and Delux radio shows so it was a very exciting invite!
When it came to selecting and contacting the artists involved in the record did you have a specific plan/approach in mind?
The plan was to mix the stars togother on record as most of them are performing each year at the big summer festivals such us Lets Rock and Rewind..All the acts loved the idea and jumped at the chance to get involved.
The album opens with yourself and Mauro Dirago taking on the Wham! classic ‘Wake Me Up Before You Go Go’. What is the reason that you chose that track and what are your memories of when you heard the original for the first time?
Myself and Mauro were both signed to the Stock Aitken and Waterman record label and go back a long way. We wanted to get together for the first track on the album and chose Wham’s ‘Wake Me Up’ as it was such a fab fun song. We added slices of George’s ‘Faith’ to give the song a different slant as we didn’t want it to sound like a karaoke version. I was lucky enough to interview George (Michael) many times and it was nice to reactivate the song in Whams 40th anniversary year.
Do you have any interesting, funny or memorable stories from the recording of the album?
The interesting thing for quite a few of us on the album is that it was very similar to recording our hits back in the day at SAW’s Hit Factory studios and the album will be promoted by the original SAW promotion team lead by Ron McCreight at Sharp End. Everything felt just right – And very fun to do.
Are there plans for a Volume Three of the ‘Rediscovered Allstars Series’?
Volume three?? We’d love to turn this into a regular series of albums and already other top bands and names have approached us to get involved, So again, watch this space let’s make vol 2 a big success for Xmas first!
Things that make me happy music wise? I love to hear short sharp links, love to hear great music presented with a pace and to sound exciting and informative. Always have FUN there is nothing like hearing a slick presenter play the hits and know what they are talking about.
What makes me musically unhappy?? The fact that the majority of radio stations now are just a ‘McDonalds’ with music, hardly any real music presenters.it seems you only have to appear on ‘I’m a celebrity ice skating in the jungle’ to get a top show which is really sad as I think radio presenting and producing is an art! Why do these radio stations play a handful of songs over and over again when there is so much great music to play. I ‘m very lucky at Radio Jackie and Delux radio as the people who run the stations want personality and are very passionate about playing great music!
