Cross-country new wave indie five-piece, Pomona build on a reputation lit by live fervour and multicolour mood, intense joy-punk by announcing their debut EP with the release of new single, Double Yellows – out now. They sat down to tell us more:
Who is in Pomona, how did you meet and what do you play?
Pomona is Joe, Jake, Liam, Harry and James. We stumbled across each other through jams and posters in practice rooms. We play art-rock and post-punk music.
What is your earliest musical memory?
Singing ‘Girlfriend in a Coma’ while finger painting at play school (Liam)
When did you begin songwriting?
14/15 years old
You have released your latest single ‘Double Yellows’. What was the story/inspiration behind the track?
It is about the quiet frustration of unacknowledged effort.
The single is accompanied by an official music video. What was the thought process behind the video and who directed it?
We were collating footage of us playing gigs, jamming and hanging out and we thought that this would give a good insight into the creative process behind our music
You have your debut EP released in September 2025. How did you want to approach the making of the EP?
We wanted to show our range of dynamics and emotion but also strived to create a collection of tracks that felt cohesive.
Where did you record the EP and who produced it?
Airtight Studios produced by Seadna McPhail.
Do you have any interesting, funny or memorable stories from the recording sessions?
Everyone except James, whose birthday it was, got too drunk the night before and weren’t as productive as we would have been in the studio.
Did you use any particular instruments, microphones, recording equipment to help you get a particular sound/tone for the record?
We used Seadna’s Audio Kitchen Trees pedal that sounded really good. We started using it in one section and then ended up using it on loads of tracks because it sounded lovely and warm. There was also a tape delay machine that we used to create some atmospheric textures.
Which of your new EP tracks hear you at your a) happiest, b) angriest and c) most reflective?
– None are particularly happy but ‘Double Yellows’ is the happiest
– ‘Heart to Heart’ is the angriest lyrically, it covers themes surrounding the rioting of 2024
– ‘Anticipate Defeat’ is the most reflective.
Was it a difficult EP to write?
All the tracks naturally came together through the collaborative process. They all felt like they fell together as a cohesive piece.
Who designed the EP artwork?
Rio Campbell (Cambo) she’s really cool.
Where is your hometown and could you please describe it in five words?
We are from all around but formed in Manchester.
How do you look after your voices?
Nowhere near as much as we should.
Do you have any live dates planned in the UK/Europe in 2025/2026?
Brighton and Manchester in July; London in August; a day festival in Salford, Hull, Birmingham and Manchester in September; and a headline in Manchester in October.
What two things do you hope to have achieved once you have left the stage?
We want to make people feel something and to have sold at least one t shirt.
Do you have any favoured stage instruments, effects, pedals, microphones etc?
We switch up our pedals quite a lot throughout the set but we like to keep the vocals wet and atmospheric. Harry uses a split bass signal to create a fuzz bass tone, Liam uses a Hudson Broadcaster on all tracks, Jake uses a sustainer guitar to create ethereal soundscapes.
You are given the opportunity to write the score for a film adaptation of a novel that you enjoy. Which novel is it and why?
‘The Stranger’ by Albert Camus, we’d do a great job at making something suitably bleak.
Who are some of your musical influences? Do you have any recommendations?
Spirit of the Beehive, Nick Cave, Cerys Hafana, High Vis
What makes Pomona happy and what makes you unhappy?
Good art = happy; fake news = sad
