Rising indie-pop quartet SOAP exist in that rarefied space where they can earn attention from Radio 1’s Future Alternative, Rock Sound and Upset while also enthralling big audiences as guests to the likes of Busted and The Vamps. The band chatted to us about their new single ‘Awkward Now’:

Who is in Soap, how did you meet and what do you play?

There are four of us in Soap. I’m Ryan and I’m the frontman, there’s Cooper who plays bass and then the brothers Josh (guitar) and Noah (drums). The band started in late 2019 with me and Cooper after connecting online and then we met Josh in 2020 as we were going into lockdown. We had no choice but to get to know Josh online and we played video games every night through lockdown until we could all get together again.

What is your earliest musical memory?

The earliest musical memory I have is sat at the computer with my mum when I was round 7 or 8 years old looking through songs on the internet and printing out the lyrics to all of the ones I wanted to sing for a school talent show. We printed out ‘It’s all about you’ by McFly, ‘The man who can’t be moved’ by The Script and ‘That’s Entertainment’ by The Jam which my mum then decided was probably not the best for a year 3 talent show.

When did you begin songwriting?

I started in primary school in a little marvel notebook that I got from my grandparents. They were all terrible and I couldn’t play guitar yet so there was absolutely nothing to them. After that I didn’t really write until I met Cooper who is an absolute writing machine and we started writing stuff for Soap.

You have your new single ‘Awkward Now’ out now. What is the story/inspiration behind the track?

‘Awkward Now’ is about the breakdown of a small town relationship whether that’s romantic or just a friendship and then having to see them everywhere you go. You run into them in the shop, the pub, absolutely everywhere. We wanted to write about how awkward that interaction can be, you nod and smile or say hello and it’s so uncomfortable. We’re an awkward band and we’ve all even through it and we know pretty much everyone else in the world probably has too.

Do you have any interesting, funny or memorable stories from the recording sessions?

Awkward was probably the quickest and easiest song that we’ve recorded, We’d had it for about two years before releasing it so recording it to release was just a case a polishing everything. The best part of recording it was definitely recording all the gang vocals with all four of us crowded round a mic shouting and being stupid.

The track is accompanied by an official music video. What was the thought process behind the video and who directed it?

It was directed by our good friend Josh Fairbrother. We didn’t really have a concept for the video all we knew was that we wanted to shoot it in Brighton. We spent two days walking all over Brighton and Josh worked his magic and it came out better than we could’ve hoped.

Where is your hometown and could you please describe it in five words?

My hometown is a tiny little mining village on a hill in north east England. Windy, wet, cold, quiet, peaceful

Do you have any live dates planned in the UK/Europe in 2025/2026?

At the moment we’ve got nothing planned but we are looking at getting some shows lined up for 2026 at some point which we are all very excited for.

What makes Soap happy and what makes you unhappy?

Playing shows, writing songs and just hanging out with each other and having a laugh are what makes us happy. We’re all quite happy people so there’s not really much that makes us unhappy if I’m being totally honest, I’m not a fan of mushrooms so I guess that.
