Artist and producer Stumbleine has released his eighth studio album ‘Deleted Scene’ is out now. He chatted to us about the album and more:
When did you begin songwriting?
I received a guitar for Christmas when I was about 14 and have been writing music ever since, I started in punk bands, then moved to post rock bands and I started blending guitar with electronics as I learnt to record and produce.
What is your earliest musical memory?
If it’s not obvious, I’m a huge Smashing Pumpkins fan. I can remember being blown away by Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. I remember stealing my older brother’s cassette and studying the artwork as I listened through.
Your eighth studio album ‘Deleted Scene’ is out now on Monotreme Records. How did you want to approach the making of the record?
I often kick against the things people expect from my music, on this record I tried to embraced them. Lo-fi and organic guitars, bittersweet vocal samples with a strong emotional undercurrent.
Where did you record the album and who produced it?
I built a shed at the bottom of my garden 5 years ago which is where I record and produce everything.
You are given the opportunity to write the score for a film adaptation of a novel that you enjoy. Which novel is it and why?
Perhaps Douglas Coupland ‘Girlfriend in a Coma.’ It has themes of nostalgia, youth & romance that would suit the style of music.
Who are some of your musical influences? Do you have any recommendations?
Burial is my spiritual leader. The darker side of dubstep was a big influence on me. The genres that run through my blood would have to be post rock and Midwest emo though.
Who created/designed the album artwork?
An artist called Knysh Ksenya, I found her art online and fell in love with her hazy dreamlike style, it was a perfect match for this album.
Was it a difficult album to write?
I found this album came together easily. As I mentioned before, I tried to distil what the fans like about my music and concentrated on that. I always write 15-20 tracks and then pick out the best ones. It’s obvious when you’ve written something good but hard to tell when you’ve written something s****
